Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement 7X

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 15969  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.
  3. Remove the CKP electrical connector.
  4. Remove the CKP fastener.
  5. Remove the CKP sensor from the Engine Block.
  6. If the CKP sensor is going to be re-used inspect the sensor for the following:
  7. 6.1.  Inspect the CKP sensor for wear, cracks, or leakage. Replace the o-ring if necessary.
    6.2.  Lubricate the new o-ring with clean engine oil before installing

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the CKP sensor to the block.
  2. Install the bolt to hold the CKP sensor to the block face.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Connect the electrical connector.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement 24X

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Remove the serpentine drive belt from crankshaft pulley.
  4. Raise the vehicle on hoist.
  5. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer using special tool (J 24420-B).
  7. Note the routing of sensor harness before removal.
  8. Remove the harness retaining clip with bolt (1).
  9. Remove the sensor electrical connector.
  10. Remove the sensor bolts (2).
  11. Remove the sensor.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the 24X CKP sensor with the bolts (2) and route harness as noted during removal.
  2. Install the harness retaining clip with bolt (1).
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (8 lb ft).

  4. Install the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  5. Install the balancer on the crankshaft using special tool J 29113.
  6. Apply thread sealer GM # 1052080 or equivalent to threads of the crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 150 N·m (110 lb ft). Refer to

  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
