The accumulator assembly service replacement part includes O-rings (as needed) for connections. The desiccant within the shell is NOT serviced separately. The desiccant is part of the sealed accumulator assembly.
Replace the accumulator assembly only when the following conditions occur:
• | When the shell is perforated and a refrigerant leak is found |
• | When the system has been open to the atmosphere for an extended period |
Do not replace accumulators as a result of the following changes:
• | Use of improved desiccant |
• | Use of improved hose material |
• | Increased use of metal tubes |
The following repairs reduce the ability of moisture to enter the refrigerant system:
• | Improved hose material |
• | Increased use of metal tubes |
Refer to Refrigerant Oil Distribution Specifications in order to determine the quantity of oil to be added to an accumulator that has been replaced.
J 39500-B R-134a Refrigerant Recovery, Recycling and Recharging (ACR4) System
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
Position the splash shield aside. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.

Important: Add the required amount of new refrigerant oil. Refer to Refrigerant Oil Distribution .
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

• | Tighten the tube nut to 23.5 N·m (17 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the block fitting nut to 24 N·m (17 lb ft). |

Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).
