Symptom

Procedure

Multiple indicators light continuously.

Inspect for serial data loss.

The Scan Tool does not communicate with the body control module (BCM).

Diagnose and repair the serial data loss.

    • The PRNDL is blank.
    • The following indicators are ON:
       - The ABS indicator
       - The SERVICE VEHICLE SOON indicator
       - The THEFT SYSTEM indicator
    • The fuel and temperature gauges are at zero.

A loss of the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) data bus has occurred. Perform the diagnostics for the set DTCs. Refer to Body Control Module System Check .

The SERVICE VEHICLE SOON indicator does not illuminate or is on continuously.

    • Use the Scan Tool in order to determine if any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are current. If any DTCs are found, follow the proper diagnostic procedures.
    • Replace the BCM under the following conditions:
        Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
       - The BCM is commanding the SERVICE VEHICLE SOON indicator ON.
       - There are no DTCs currently set.
    • If the BCM is not commanding on the SERVICE VEHICLE SOON, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

The indicators do not light under any circumstance.

Replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console. The LED indicators are not replaceable.

    • The THEFT SYSTEM indicator is ON continually.
    • The BCM has been replaced.
    • The engine starts.

Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in order to relearn the Theft Deterrent System password. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming or Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls.

The speedometer is operating improperly.

    • Perform the diagnostics on the Vehicle Speed Sensor.
    •  If the Speedometer is still malfunctioning, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

The tachometer does not operate properly.

Use Scan Tool in order to monitor the PCM.

    • If you detect an incorrect ENGINE RPM signal, refer to Engine Controls for a diagnosis.
    • If the signal is OK, use Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data in order to determine if the tachometer is active.
       - If you detect an incorrect ENGINE RPM signal, refer to Tachometer Inoperative in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
       - If OK, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Engine coolant temperature gauge does not operate properly.

Use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the PCM.

    • If you detect an incorrect engine coolant temperature signal, refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls for a diagnosis.
    • If the signal is OK, use Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.
       - If you detect an incorrect engine coolant temperature signal, perform an Instrument Cluster WOW in SPECIAL FUNCTIONS.
       - If the engine coolant temperature gauge still does not read correctly, and the BCM is transmitting the wrong signal, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
       - If the engine coolant temperature signal is OK, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Fuel gauge does not operate properly.

  1. Perform an instrument cluster WOW in SPECIAL FUNCTIONS.
  2. Replace the cluster if the gauge does not sweep full range.
  3. Use a Scan Tool in order to read the DTC's.

Refer to DTC P0462 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Low Voltage and DTC P0463 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Voltage or any Loss of SPI DTCs.

ABS indicator lights continuously with no loss of serial data.

Use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).

    • If the EBCM is commanding the BCM to turn the ABS indicator on, refer to Diagnostic System Check in Antilock Brake System.
    • If the EBCM is commanding the ABS indicator off, use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM SPI serial data bus.
    • Inspect the CKT 849 at the level switch for a short to ground.
    • Replace the level switch with a known good switch if a short to ground is found in CKT 849.
       - If the BCM is commanding the ABS indicator on, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
       - If the BCM is commanding the ABS indicator off, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
    • The brake indicator lights continuously with no loss of serial data.
    • The park brake is released.
    • The EBCM is not commanding the brake indicator to illuminate.

Use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM INPUTS Park Brake Input.

    • If the BCM is reading the Park Brake Input ON, refer to Diagnostic System Check - Audible Warnings in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
    • If the reading is OK, use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the EBCM.
       - If the EBCM is commanding the BRAKE indicator ON, refer to Diagnostic System Check in Antilock Brake Systems.
       - If the reading is OK, use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.
    • If the BCM is commanding the BRAKE indicator ON, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
    • If the BCM is not commanding the BRAKE indicator ON, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

The Check Engine indicator lights continuously.

Refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls.

CHECK OIL indicator lights continuously with no loss of serial data.

Use theScan Tool in order to monitor the PCM.

    • If the PCM is commanding the CHECK OIL indicator ON, refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls.
    • If the PCM is commanding the CHECK OIL indicator OFF, use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM SPI serial data link.
       - If the BCM is commanding the CHECK OIL indicator ON, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
       - Monitor the BCM to cluster data - CHECK OIL LIGHT.
       - If the BCM SPI serial data link is commanding the CHECK OIL indicator OFF, and the indicator remains lit, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to the Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

CRUISE indicator lights continuously with no loss of serial data.

Use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the PCM.

  1. If the PCM is commanding the CRUISE indicator ON, refer to Cruise Control System Check .
  2. If the CRUISE indicator is OFF, use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.
  3.  - If the BCM is commanding the CRUISE indicator ON, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
     - Monitor the BCM cluster data CRUISE LAMP ON/OFF.
     - If the BCM SPI serial data link is commanding the CRUISE indicator OFF, and the indicator remains lit, replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
     - If the EBCM commands the BRAKE indicator to illuminate, the CRUISE function will be canceled.

Fuel Gauge Check indicator remains ON when gauge pointer is in normal range or fails to light when the pointer is out of range.

Use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.

    • If the BCM is commanding the fuel gauge check indicator ON, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
    • If the BCM is commanding the fuel gauge check indicator OFF, and the indicator remains lit, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to the Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

High Beam indicator operates improperly.

Refer to Headlamps Inoperative - High Beams in Lighting Systems. If this is OK, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Check indicator remains ON when gauges pointers are in normal range or fails to light when pointers are out of range.

Use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.

    • If the BCM is commanding the engine coolant temperature gauge check indicator ON, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
    • If the BCM is commanding the engine coolant temperature gauge check indicator OFF and the indicator remains lit, replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Left Turn Signal operates improperly.

Refer to Turn Signal Lamps Inoperative - Hazard Lamps Operate in Lighting Systems.

Right Turn Signal operates improperly.

Refer to Turn Signal Lamps Inoperative - Hazard Lamps Operate in Lighting Systems.

Low coolant indicator lights continuously.

  1. Use Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM INPUTS.
  2. Use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.
  3. If the BCM is commanding the Low Coolant indicator OFF and the Low Coolant indicator remains lit, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

LOW WASH indicator operates improperly.

  1. Use Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM INPUTS.
  2. Use the Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.
  3. If the BCM is commanding the LOW WASH indicator OK and the indicator remains lit, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

The oil pressure indicator lights continuously with no serial data loss.

  1. Use Scan Tool in order to monitor the PCM.
  2. If the PCM is commanding the oil pressure indicator ON, refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls.

  3. Use Scan Tool in order to cluster the data.
  4. If the BCM is commanding the Oil Pressure indicator OFF and the oil pressure indicator remains lit, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

PRNDL display does not operate properly with no serial data loss.

  1. Use Scan Tool in order to monitor the PCM.
  2. If the GEAR POSITION matches the PRNDL, refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls.

  3. Use Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.
  4. If the BCM command does not match the TRANSAXLE RANGE reading from the PCM, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.

  5. Use Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.
  6. If the PRNDL display on the instrument cluster does not match the GEAR POSITION, replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

The seat belt indicator lights continuously with no serial data loss and with the seat belt buckled.

Use Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM INPUTS Park Brake Input.

    • If the BCM is reading the Seat Belt Input UNBUCKLED, refer to Diagnostic System Check - Audible Warnings in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
    • If OK, use Scan Tool in order to monitor the BCM to cluster data.
       - If the BCM is commanding the seat belt indicator UNBUCKLED, replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement and BCM Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control Systems.
       - If the BCM is commanding the seat belt indicator BUCKLED, replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

THEFT SYSTEM indicator lights continuously or operates improperly.

Refer to Content Theft Deterrent (CTD) System Check in Theft Deterrent .

The automatic light control does not function.

Refer to Daytime Running Lights (DRL) System Check in Lighting.

The phase loop lock indicates a fault.

Replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

The air conditioning does not function.
