Water Pump Replacement 3.1 L

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  2. Object Number: 30978  Size: SH
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 30996  Size: SH
  6. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  7. Remove the water pump pulley.
  8. Remove the water pump attaching bolts.
  9. Remove the water pump.
  10. Remove the water pump gasket.
  11. Clean the water pump mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

NOTICE: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.

  1. Install the gasket.
  2. Install the water pump.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the water pump mounting bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 10N·m (89 lb in).

  6. Install the water pump pulley. Loosely install the mounting bolts.
  7. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  8. Install the water pump pulley bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 25N·m (18 lb in).

    Important: Properly filling a system that has been completely drained will require the use the air bleed vents.

  10. Refill the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  11. Inspect for leaks. Refer to Cooling System Leak Testing .
