Rattle, Buzz or Clunk Noise From Vehicle Underside (Reposition Heat Shield in Front of Fuel Tank)

Subject:Rattle, Buzz or Clunk Noise from Vehicle Underside (Reposition Heat Shield in Front of Fuel Tank)

Models:2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rattle, buzz or clunk from under the vehicle. This sound may be accompanied by a vibration or tapping that can be felt in the floorpan of the vehicle. The source may seem to come from the mid-point of the vehicle.

Cause

There may be insufficient clearance between the exhaust pipe and the fastener that secures the fuel tank heat shield at the forward edge of the shield.

Correction

Reposition the heat shield as described below:

  1. Raise the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 784440 Size: SH
  3. Locate the fastener that joins the forward edge of the fuel tank heat shield (quilted material) to the plain sheet metal shield. Refer to the figure. The fastener location is indicated by the arrow.
  4. Important: When applying pressure to the heat shield, make sure that force is applied at the fastener location and only to the plain metal shield. Applying force to the quilted material may distort or separate it.

  5. Bend the heat shield upward by prying or pushing at the location of the fastener until a minimum clearance of 15 mm (5/8 in) is obtained between the pipe and the head of the fastener.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
