Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Place a drain pan beneath the engine oil pan in order to catch escaping engine oil.

  4. Object Number: 178312 Size: SH

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 178313 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the oil pump strainer (2) with a new oil pump strainer seal (3) to the cylinder block.
  2. Secure the oil pump strainer with the oil pump strainer bolt and then the oil pump strainer bracket bolt.

    Tighten

        • Tighten the oil pump strainer bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb in).
        • Tighten the oil pump strainer bracket bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

    Object Number: 178312 Size: SH
  3. Apply a continuous bead of GM P/N 12346240 or the equivalent, to the engine oil pan mating surface.
  4. Install the engine oil pan (3) to cylinder block. Use two nuts and fourteen bolts in order to secure the engine oil pan (3).
  5. Tighten
Tighten the engine oil pan nuts and bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  6. Install the crankshaft position sensor (4).
  7. Install a new gasket (5) and engine oil drain plug (6).
  8. Tighten
Tighten the engine oil drain plug to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Refill the engine oil to specifications. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12. Start the engine. Check the oil pressure. Refer to Oil Pressure Diagnosis and Testing .
