EVAP Canister Purge System Inspection

Caution: Do not breathe the air through the EVAP component tubes or hoses. The fuel vapors inside the EVAP components may cause personal injury.

Important: Perform a careful visual inspection of the EVAP control system components and connecting hoses before the diagnosis of an EVAP control system malfunction.

  1. Allow the engine to cool to room temperature.
  2. Start the engine (cold).
  3. Disconnect the purge hose from the EVAP canister.
  4. Place a finger against the end of the disconnected hose and check for vacuum. Vacuum should not be felt when the engine is below normal operating temperatures.
  5. Connect the purge hose to the EVAP canister and warm the engine up to normal operating temperature.
  6. Disconnect the purge hose from the EVAP canister.
  7. Important: The EVAP control system does not perform EVAP canister purging (vacuum is not detected at the purge hose) unless the engine is sufficiently warmed up and the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) is fully activated. When the purge hose is disconnected as in step 6, some air may be drawn into the purge line. As a result, the powertrain control module (PCM) might detect a change in the purge gas concentration and stop purging. This is a normal action and may be the cause of a failure to detect vacuum in step 7. If no vacuum is felt in step 7, continued testing of the EVAP system may be necessary in order to avoid the replacement of good parts.

    Failure of the EVAP control system to pass any of these checks indicates a possible malfunction that will require further inspection.

  8. Place a finger over the disconnected hose and check for vacuum. Vacuum should be felt with the engine running at normal operating temperature.

EVAP Canister Inspection

  1. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the EVAP canister.
  2. Blow air into the tank pipe (1) of the EVAP canister. There should be no restriction of air flow through the purge pipe (2) and the air pipe (3).
  3. Replace the EVAP canister if the EVAP canister fails the above check. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement .
  4. Connect the vacuum hoses to the EVAP canister.

EVAP Canister Purge Valve Inspection

Tools Required

J 39200 Digital Multimeter


    Object Number: 66062  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.
  2. Measure the resistance between the electrical terminals of the EVAP canister purge valve (2) with the DMM (1). The resistance should be 28 to 39 ohms at 20°C (68°F).
  3. Replace the EVAP canister purge valve if the resistance is not 28 to 39 ohms at 20°C (68°F). Proceed to step 4 if the resistance is within the specification. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 66064  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve vacuum hose (3) from the intake manifold.
  6. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve vacuum hose (2) from EVAP canister.
  7. Blow air into the EVAP canister purge valve vacuum hose (2) that was disconnected from the EVAP canister. Air should not pass through the EVAP canister purge valve (1) and exit from the intake manifold hose (3).

  9. Connect 12 volts DC to the EVAP canister purge valve electrical terminals.
  10. Blow air into the EVAP canister purge valve vacuum hose that was disconnected from the EVAP canister. Air should pass through the EVAP canister purge valve and exit from the intake manifold hose.
  11. Replace the EVAP canister purge valve if the EVAP canister purge valve failed this inspection. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement .
  12. Connect the EVAP canister purge valve vacuum hoses.
  13. Connect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.

EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid Inspection

J 39200 Digital Multimeter


    Object Number: 55677  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the EVAP canister vent solenoid electrical connector.
  2. Measure the resistance between the electrical terminals of the EVAP canister vent solenoid (2) with the DMM (1). The resistance should be 25 to 30 ohms at 20°C (68°F).
  3. Replace the EVAP canister vent solenoid if the resistance is not 25 to 30 ohms at 20°C (68°F). Proceed to step 4 if the resistance is within the specification. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Vent Solenoid Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 55678  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the EVAP canister vent solenoid hose from the EVAP canister.
  6. Blow air into the EVAP canister vent solenoid hose that was disconnected from the EVAP canister. Air should pass through the EVAP canister vent solenoid.

  7. Object Number: 158146  Size: SH
  8. Connect 12 volts DC to the EVAP canister vent solenoid electrical terminals.
  9. Blow air into the EVAP canister vent solenoid vacuum hose that was disconnected from the EVAP canister. Air should not pass through the EVAP canister vent solenoid and exit from the other end.
  10. Replace the EVAP canister vent solenoid, if the EVAP canister vent solenoid failed this inspection. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Vent Solenoid Replacement .
  11. Reconnect the EVAP canister vent solenoid hose.
  12. Reconnect the EVAP canister vent solenoid electrical connector.

EVAP Tank Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Inspection

    Object Number: 55679  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve electrical connector.
  2. Measure the resistance between the electrical terminals of the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve (2) with the DMM (1). The resistance should be 28 to 36 ohms at 20°C (68°F).
  3. Replace the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve if the resistance is not 28 to 36 ohms at 20°C (68°F). Proceed to step 3 if the resistance is within the specification. Refer to Evaporative Emission Tank Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Replace Replacement.

  4. Object Number: 55680  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve vacuum hoses from the intake manifold and from the Tank Pressure Control valve vacuum pipe.
  6. Blow air into the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve vacuum hose that was disconnected from the vacuum pipe. Air should not pass through the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve and exit from the intake manifold hose.

  7. Object Number: 158152  Size: SH
  8. Connect 12 volts DC to the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve electrical terminals.
  9. Blow air into the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve vacuum hose that was disconnected from the vacuum pipe. Air should pass through the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve and exit from the intake manifold hose.
  10. Replace the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve if the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve failed this inspection. Refer to Evaporative Emission Tank Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Replace .
  11. Reconnect the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve vacuum hoses.
  12. Reconnect the EVAP tank pressure control solenoid valve electrical connector.

Fuel Tank Pressure Control Valve Inspection

Tools Required

J 23738-A Hand Vacuum Pump


    Object Number: 159175  Size: SH
  1. Connect a length of hose to the port marked TANK on the fuel tank pressure control valve.
  2. Blow hard into the hose. Air should pass slowly through to the side marked CAN of the fuel tank pressure control valve (1).
  3. Remove the hose from the TANK side of the fuel tank pressure control valve.
  4. Connect the hose to the CAN side of the fuel tank pressure control valve.

  5. Object Number: 159175  Size: SH
  6. Blow easily into the hose. Air should pass through to the side marked TANK of the fuel tank pressure control valve (2).
  7. Apply 15 inches of vacuum to the vacuum port of the fuel tank pressure control valve.
  8. With vacuum applied, blow into the port marked TANK. Air should pass easily through to the side marked CAN of the fuel tank pressure control valve (3).
  9. Replace the fuel tank pressure control valve if the valve fails any of the above checks. Refer to Fuel Tank Pressure Control Valve Replacement .
