The steering column is an energy-absorbing mechanism. The design allows the steering column to collapse in the event of a collision. The collapsing steering column minimizes the possibility of an injury to the driver.

The ignition switch is column-mounted. You can lock the column in order to inhibit theft. The combination switch controls the turn signal operation and the headlamp operation (between the high and the low beam).

You can remove and disassemble the steering column with relative ease. In order to ensure that the column maintains the proper energy absorption, use only the following specified fasteners:

    • The screws
    • The bolts
    • The nuts

Tighten the appropriate fasteners to the specified torques.

Take special care in handling the column assembly when you remove the column assembly from the vehicle. The following conditions can shear or loosen the plastic injections that keep the column rigid:

    • Using a steering wheel puller other than the recommended puller
    • Hitting the end of the steering shaft
    • Sharply leaning on the assembly
    • Dropping the assembly
