J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR). Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Supplemental Inflatable Restraint.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the inflator module. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 349624 Size: SH
  6. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut from the shaft.
  7. Scribe an alignment mark (1,2) across the wheel and the steering shaft in order to ease the installation.

  8. Object Number: 349628 Size: SH

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 349624 Size: SH

Important: When installing the steering wheel, the 2 lugs on the SIR coil must line up with the 2 grooves on the back side of the steering wheel. If this alignment is not correct the SIR coil will be damaged when the steering wheel turns.

  1. Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Ensure that the alignment marks (1,2) on the steering wheel and the steering shaft match correctly.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Secure the steering wheel to the steering shaft with the steering wheel retaining nut.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  5. Install the inflator module. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement .
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Supplemental Inflatable Restraints.
