Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  3. After the transaxle has cooled, remove the transaxle drain plug, and drain the fluid into the drain pan or into the suitable container.
  4. Remove the following components:
    5. • The 15 bolts
    • The fluid pan guard (3)
    • The fluid pan (2)
    • The fluid pan gasket (1)

  5. Disconnect the connectors (6, 7) from the direct clutch solenoid and the second brake solenoid (5,8).
  6. Remove the following components from the lower valve body:
    7. • The two bolts
    • The direct clutch solenoid (5)
    • The second brake solenoid (8)

  7. Remove the solenoid wiring harness retaining nut and the plate (3).
  8. Remove the bracket that retains the solenoid wiring harness from the outer side of the transaxle case.
  9. Remove the solenoid wiring harness (1) from the transaxle.
  10. Inspect the wiring harness grommet and the O-ring for damage. Replace the components if necessary.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the solenoid wiring harness (2) into the transaxle case.

    2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Install the plate (3) that retains the solenoid wiring harness, and the nut.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  3. Install the bracket (1) that retains the solenoid wiring harness to the transaxle case.

    4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  4. Install the direct clutch solenoid (5) and the second brake solenoid to the lower valve body. Secure the solenoids with the retaining bolts.

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  5. Connect the connectors (6, 7) to the direct clutch solenoid (5) and to the second brake solenoids (8).
  6. Install the new fluid pan gasket, the fluid pan, and the fluid pan guard to the transaxle. Secure the items with 15 bolts. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement .

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle fluid pan bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  7. Install the transaxle drain plug.

    8. Tighten
    Tighten the drain plug to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Refill the transaxle, as necessary. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
