Spark Plug Replacement 1.0L

Removal Procedure

    Notice: This engine is equipped with an aluminum cylinder head. Allow the engine to cool before removing spark plugs. Removing the spark plugs from an engine at operating temperature may damage the spark plug threads in the cylinder head. Also be sure to clean any dirt or debris from around spark plug holes prior to removing spark plugs.

    Important: Note the correct routing of the wires prior to removal in order to maintain the correct engine firing order.

  1. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  2. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head.
  3. Inspect the spark plugs for electrode wear, for carbon deposits, and for damage to the insulator. Refer to Spark Plug Visual Diagnosis .

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Use one of the following types of spark plugs:
  2. • AC Type R42XLS
    • Denso Type W20EPR-U11
    • NGK Type BPR6ES-11
  3. Set the spark plug gap to 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in).
  4. Install the spark plugs to the cylinder head.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the spark plugs to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

  6. Correctly route the the spark plug wires, and install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs.

Spark Plug Replacement 1.3L

Removal Procedure

    Notice: This engine is equipped with an aluminum cylinder head. Allow the engine to cool before removing spark plugs. Removing the spark plugs from an engine at operating temperature may damage the spark plug threads in the cylinder head. Also be sure to clean any dirt or debris from around spark plug holes prior to removing spark plugs.

  1. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  2. Carefully release the number 1 spark plug wire from the clip on the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  3. Remove the 2 bolts from each ignition coil.
  4. Remove the number 1 spark plug wire and the number 1-4 ignition coil from the spark plugs.
  5. Remove the number 2-3 ignition coil and the number 3 spark plug wire from the spark plugs.
  6. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head.
  7. Inspect the spark plugs for electrode wear, for carbon deposits, and for damage to the insulator . Refer to Spark Plug Visual Diagnosis --.

    • NGK type BKR6E-11
  3. Set the spark plug gap to 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in).
  4. Install the spark plugs to the cylinder head.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the spark plug to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

  6. Install the number 2-3 ignition coil and the number 3 spark plug wire to the spark plugs.
  7. Install the number 4 spark plug wire and the number 1-4 ignition coil to the spark plugs.
  8. Install the 2 bolts to each ignition coil.
  9. Carefully secure the number 1 spark plug wire in the clip on the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  10. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
