Problem

Action

Air in the power steering fluid

  1. Inspect the power steering fluid.
  2. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

Low fluid level due to one of the following conditions:

    • Improper initial fill of the power steering system
    • Power steering system leak
  1. Inspect the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump Leaks .
  2. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

Loose pump mounting

Tighten the pump mounting to specification.

Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

Grounded out power steering gear inlet (pressure) hose.

  1. Inspect the power steering gear inlet (pressure) hose.
  2. Adjust the power steering gear inlet (pressure) hose for proper mounting and proper balance. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement or to Power Steering Hoses Replacement .

Noise heard after a power steering system check

  1. Allow the engine compartment to cool.
  2. Operate the vehicle at idle.
  3. Ensure that the vehicle reaches operating temperature.
  4. Listen for the noise.
