Draining Procedure

Caution: Do not drain the fuel into an open container. Never store the fuel in an open container due to the possibility of a fire or an explosion.

Notice: Do not drain fuel through the fuel tank filler pipe in order to prevent damage to the fuel tank filler pipe check-ball.

Important: Always maintain cleanliness when servicing fuel system components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in engine electrical.
  2. Loosen the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in general information.
  4. Remove the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe restraints.
  5. Clean the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe connections and the surrounding area before disconnecting the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe in order to avoid possible contamination of the fuel system.
  6. Loosen the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe hose clamp.
  7. Wrap a shop towel around the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe and slowly remove the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe from the fuel tank EVAP pipe.
  8. Use a hand operated fuel pump device in order to drain the fuel through the fuel tank EVAP pipe.
  9. Reconnect the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe and the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe hose clamp.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Add fuel and tighten the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
  12. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in engine electrical.
  13. Inspect for leaks.
  14. 13.1. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds.
    13.2. Turn the ignition switch OFF for 10 seconds.
    13.3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    13.4. Check for fuel leaks.
