Are there any PCM DTC's present?

Refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls (3.1) or Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls (3.8)

  1. Insert the ignition key into the J 35628-A .
  2. Turn on the J 35628-A .
  3. Read the key code shown on the display of the J 35628-A .

Does the J 35628-A display a key code value of 1 through 15?

  1. Write down the key code displayed on the J 35628-A .
  2. Turn off the J 35628-A .
  3. Important: This vehicle is equipped with the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Do not confuse the key detection CKT 2-way connector (CKT 1073 and CKT 1074) with the yellow 2-way SIR connector.

  4. Connect the J 35628-A .
  5. Insert the ignition key into the ignition key lock cylinder.
  6. Turn on the J 35628-A .
  7. While observing the display on the J 35628-A turn the ignition switch to RUN.

Does the J 35628-A display a key code value that matches the key code value recorded in step 1?

  1. Disconnect the J 35628-A
  2. Connect a DMM.
  3. Measure the voltage by backprobing between B+ and the key detection CKT 2-way connector (CKT 1073 and CKT 1074) terminal B (harness side).

Is the voltage within the specified range?

B+ (10-14 V)

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Disconnect the theft deterrent module connector.
  3. Reconnect the key detection CKT 2-way connector (CKT 1073 and CKT 1074).
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  5. Connect a DMM.
  6. Measure the voltage by backprobing between the key detection CKT 2-way connector (CKT 1073 and CKT 1074) terminal  A and the ground.

Is the voltage less than the specified value?

2 V

Use a DMM to measure the resistance by backprobing between the key detection CKT 2-way connector (CKT 1073 and CKT 1074) terminal A and the ground.

Is the resistance within the specified range?

Go to Step 7

  1. Connect a DMM.
  2. Measure the resistance between the theft deterrent module connector terminal B8 and the key detection CKT 2-way connector (CKT  1073 and CKT 1074) terminal A.

Is the resistance less than the specified value?

2 ohms

  1. Clean the ignition key resistor pellet.
  2. Connect a DMM.
  3. Measure the resistance across the resistor pellet.
  4. Compare the resistance value of the pellet with the following values:
  5. • Nominal: 402 ohms (386 ohms-438 ohms)
    • Nominal: 523 ohms (502 ohms-564 ohms)
    • Nominal: 681 ohms (654 ohms-728 ohms)
    • Nominal: 887 ohms (852 ohms-942 ohms)
    • Nominal: 1130 ohms (1085 ohms-1195 ohms)
    • Nominal: 1470 ohms (1411 ohms-1549 ohms)
    • Nominal: 1870 ohms (1795 ohms-1965 ohms)
    • Nominal: 2370 ohms (2275 ohms-2485 ohms)
    • Nominal: 3010 ohms (2890 ohms-3150 ohms)
    • Nominal: 3740 ohms (3590 ohms-3910 ohms)
    • Nominal: 4750 ohms (4560 ohms-4960 ohms)
    • Nominal: 6040 ohms (5798 ohms-6302 ohms)
    • Nominal: 7500 ohms (7200 ohms-7820 ohms)
    • Nominal: 9530 ohms (9149 ohms-9931 ohms)
    • Nominal: 11800 ohms (11328 ohms-12292 ohms)

Does the resistor pellet resistance value match the values listed above?

  1. Inspect for a poor connection at the ignition key lock cylinder resistor sensing contacts.
  2. If the connection is OK, replace the ignition key lock cylinder. Refer to Steering Column Lock Cylinder Set - Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Lock Cylinder Set - Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering (Column Shift).

Is the repair complete?

  1. Disconnect the theft deterrent module.
  2. Connect a DMM.
  3. Measure the resistance between the theft deterrent module harness connector terminal B7 and the key detection CKT 2-way connector (CKT 1073 and CKT 1074) terminal B on the harness side.

Is the resistance less than the specified value?

2 ohms

Go to Step 11

Inspect CKT 1550 for a poor connection or an open.

Is the repair complete?

Repair the poor connection or the open in CKT 1074.

Is the repair complete?

Repair the short to B+ in CKT 1073.

Repair the short to ground in CKT 1073.

Repair the poor connection or the open in CKT 1073.

  2. Reconnect any connectors/components removed.

  2. Reconnect the theft deterrent module.
  3. Connect a test light between B+ and the Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal 8.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the Start position.
  5. Observe the test light.

Does the engine start and the test light flash?
