Notice: If any brake component is repaired or replaced such that air is allowed to enter the brake system, the entire bleeding procedure must be followed.

Tools Required

    • J 35589 Bleeder Adapter
    • J 29532 Diaphragm Type Brake Bleeder

Notice: Pressure bleeding equipment must be of the diaphragm type. It must have a rubber diaphragm between the air supply and the brake fluid to prevent air, moisture, and other contaminants from entering the hydraulic system.

Caution: Brake fluid may irritate eyes and skin. In case of contact, take the following actions:

       • Eye contact--rinse thoroughly with water.
       • Skin contact--wash with soap and water.
       • If ingested--consult a physician immediately.

  1. Clean the fluid reservoir cover and the surrounding areas.
  2. Ensure that the master cylinder reservoir is at the proper level. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling. Add clean brake fluid as required.
  3. Install the J 35589 to brake fluid reservoir.
  4. Install the J 29532 to the J 35589 .
  5. Adjust the pressure bleeding equipment to 205--240 kPa (30--35 psi).
  6. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Jacking and Lifting in General Information
  7. If it is necessary to bleed all of the calipers or wheel cylinders, use the following sequence:
  8. 7.1. Right rear
    7.2. Left rear
    7.3. Left front
    7.4. Right front
  9. Place the proper size box end wrench on the bleeder screw.
  10. Attach a clear tube over the bleeder screw.
  11. Submerge the other end of the tube in a clean container partially filled with clean brake fluid.

  12. Open the bleeder screw at least 3/4 of a turn.
  13. Allow the brake fluid to flow until no air is seen in the fluid.
  14. Close the bleeder screw.
  15. Tighten

    • Tighten the wheel cylinder bleeder screws to 7  N·m (62 lb in).
    • Tighten the caliper bleeder screws to 13  N·m (115 lb in).
  16. Repeat steps 8 to 12 for the remaining calipers and wheel cylinder.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Remove the J 35589 and theJ 29532 .
  19. Inspect the fluid level in the reservoir. Fill the reservoir to the proper level using clean brake fluid.
  20. Inspect the pedal travel and feel. Complete the following steps:
  21. 17.1. With the ignition switch in the RUN position, apply the brake pedal with moderate force and hold the pedal.
17.2. Note the pedal travel and feel. If the pedal feels firm and constant and the pedal travel is not excessive, start the engine. With the engine running re-check the pedal travel.
17.3. If the pedal travel is still firm and constant and the pedal travel is not excessive, road test the vehicle. Make several normal (non-ABS) stops from a moderate speed in order to ensure the proper brake system function.
  22. If the pedal feels soft or has excessive travel using the scan tool perform the automated bleed procedure. Refer to Auto Bleed Procedure in Antilock Brakes.
