Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 37043 Parking Brake Cable Release Tool


    Object Number: 492729  Size: SH
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Bend the tang on the connector (1) to allow cable removal.
  3. Pull and hold the cable towards the rear of the car in order to create a slack in the cable.
  4. Remove the cable (2) from the connector (1).

  6. Remove the cable (1) from the axle bracket (2).

  7. Object Number: 619864  Size: SH
  8. Remove the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes
  9. Remove the parking brake cable from the brake shoe actuator.

  10. Object Number: 619866  Size: SH
  11. Remove the parking brake cable from the backing plate using the J 37043 .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 619864  Size: SH
  1. Install the parking brake cable to the backing plate. Ensure that all of the locking tabs are through the backing plate.
  2. Install the parking brake cable to the parking brake actuator.
  3. Install the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.

  4. Object Number: 492734  Size: SH
  5. Install the cable (1) to the axle bracket (2).

  6. Object Number: 492729  Size: SH
  7. Connect the right rear cable (2) to the connector (1).
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Notice: Parking brake adjustment is not necessary. This is a self adjusting system and damage may result from attempting to adjust or modify this system in any way. It may be necessary to adjust the rear brakes to obtain the proper tension in the system.

  10. Fully apply and release the hand brake 4-6 times in order to self adjust the system.
