VEH. CHARGES WITH IGN. KEY 'ON' BUT NOT 'OFF'

SUBJECT: VEHICLE CHARGES WITH IGNITION KEY "ON" BUT NOT "OFF" (INSTALL ABS SERVICE JUMPER HARNESS)

MODELS: 1997-98 CHEVROLET S-10 ELECTRIC TRUCK

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO CHARGE THE VEHICLE WITH THE IGNITION KEY OFF, BUT MAY BE ABLE TO CHARGE THE VEHICLE WITH THE KEY ON.

CAUSE:

THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE MAY CAUSE THE VEHICLE'S COMMUNICATION SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION.

CORRECTION:

INSTALL ABS SERVICE JUMPER HARNESS USING THE PART NUMBER LISTED BELOW. USE THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. DISCONNECT THE HIGH-VOLTAGE SERVICE DISCONNECT.

2. REMOVE THE SCREWS SECURING THE ABS CONTROLLER TO THE ABS BRAKE CONTROL MODULE (1998 TRUCKS ONLY) (FIGURE 1).

3. DISCONNECT THE 10-WAY FOUR WHEEL ANTILOCK (4WAL) C1 CONNECTOR FROM THE ABS BRAKE CONTROL MODULE. REFER TO C1 CONNECTOR DESCRIPTION IN SECTION 5E1 OF THE S-10 ELECTRIC TRUCK SERVICE MANUAL. (FIGURES 1,2).

4. INSTALL THE BLACK FEMALE CONNECTOR ON THE ABS SERVICE JUMPER HARNESS TO THE ABS BRAKE CONTROL MODULE.

5. INSTALL THE BLACK MALE CONNECTOR ON THE ABS SERVICE JUMPER HARNESS TO THE 10-WAY 4WAL C1 CONNECTOR WHICH WAS DISCONNECTED IN STEP 2.

6. INSTALL THE ABS CONTROLLER TO THE ABS BRAKE CONTROL MODULE (1998 TRUCKS ONLY).

7. REMOVE THE UNDERHOOD FUSE BLOCK (1998 TRUCKS ONLY) (FIGURE 3).

8. DISCONNECT THE GRAY 5-PIN WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CONNECTOR (C111 FOR 1997, C104 FOR 1998) LOCATED BEHIND THE ABS BRAKE CONTROL MODULE ON 1997 TRUCKS (FIGURE 4), AND BETWEEN THE UNDERHOOD FUSE BLOCK AND THE FENDER ON 1998 TRUCKS (FIGURE 5). REFER TO CONNECTOR DESCRIPTIONS IN SECTION 8A-202 OF THE S-10 ELECTRIC TRUCK SERVICE MANUAL.

9. CONNECT THE GRAY 5-PIN CONNECTORS ON THE ABS SERVICE JUMPER HARNESS TO THE C111 OR C104 CONNECTORS.

10. INSTALL THE UNDERHOOD FUSE BLOCK (1998 TRUCKS ONLY) (FIGURE 3).

11. CONNECT THE HIGH-VOLTAGE SERVICE DISCONNECT.

12. TURN ON THE IGNITION KEY UNTIL THE WAIT TELLTALE GOES OUT.

13. TURN OFF THE IGNITION KEY AND VERIFY THAT THE VEHICLE WILL CHARGE WITH THE IGNITION KEY OFF.
