Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.

  2. Object Number: 293548  Size: SH
  3. Remove the evaporator pipe-to-shroud retaining bolts.
  4. Position the evaporator pipe rearward.
  5. Remove the following components:
  6. • The coolant surge tank. Refer to Radiator Surge Tank Replacement in Engine Cooling.
    • The coolant surge tank hoses. Refer to Surge Tank Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Remove the upper radiator hose from the radiator. Refer to the following procedures in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual:
  8. • For 5.7 L engines, refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (5.7L).
    • For 6.5 L diesel engines, refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (6.5L).
  9. Remove the evaporative emissions canister and bracket. Refer to EVAP Canister Replacement in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  10. Remove the windshield washer solvent container. Refer to Washer Solvent Container and Pump Replacement in Windshield Wiper/Washer System in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  11. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.

  13. Remove the front cover shield.
  14. Remove the bolts from the lower radiator shroud.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Disconnect the upper and the lower transmission cooler lines from the radiator. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Line Replacement in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  17. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator. Refer to the following procedures in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual:
  18. • For 5.7 L engines, refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (5.7L).
    • For 6.5 L diesel engines, refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (6.5L).
  19. Disconnect the following oil cooler lines from the radiator:
  20. • The upper
    • The lower
    • Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Line Replacement in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  21. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  22. Remove the lower radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement (Lower) in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.

  24. Disconnect the return line from the power steering gear.
  25. Remove the grille. Refer to Radiator Grille Replacement in Body and Accessories in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.

  26. Object Number: 293957  Size: SH
  27. Disconnect the return hose from the cooler.

  28. Object Number: 293958  Size: SH
  29. Remove the cooler to frame retaining bolts.
  30. Pull the cooler and the connected return line out through the frame.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 293958  Size: SH
  1. Install the connected return line through the frame and over to the power steering gear.
  2. Install the cooler onto the frame.
  3. Install the cooler bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the cooler bolts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  5. Connect the return line to the cooler.
  6. Install the grille. Refer to Radiator Grille Replacement in Body and Accessories in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.

  7. Object Number: 293955  Size: SH
  8. Connect the return line to the power steering gear.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the return line to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  10. Install the lower radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement (Lower) in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  11. Do not install the bolts.

  12. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  13. Connect the upper and the lower oil cooler lines to the radiator. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Line Replacement in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  14. Connect the lower radiator hose to the radiator. Refer to the following procedures in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  15. • For 5.7 L engines, refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (5.7L)
    • For 6.5 L diesel engines, refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (6.5L).
  16. Connect the following transmission cooler lines to the radiator:
  17. • The upper
    • The lower
    • Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Line Replacement in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  18. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  19. Install the radiator shroud bolts. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement (Lower) in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.

  21. Install the front cover shield.
  22. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.

  24. Install the evaporative emissions canister and the bracket. Refer to EVAP Canister Replacement in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  25. Install the upper radiator hose to the radiator. Refer to following procedures in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual:
  26. • For 5.7 L engines, refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (5.7L)
    • For 6.5 L diesel engines, refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (6.5L)
  27. Install the following components:
  28. • The coolant surge tank. Refer to Radiator Surge Tank Replacement in Engine Cooling.
    • The coolant surge tank hoses. Refer to Surge Tank Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  29. Reposition the evaporator pipe.
  30. Install the bolts.
  31. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  32. Refill the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System in Power Steering System in the 1999 C/K Truck Service Manual.
