Removal Procedure

  1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR). Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  5. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

    Notice: Use care not to damage the steering column when mounting it in the table vise. Use a soft-jawed vise, or wrap a shop cloth around the steering shaft assembly where it contacts the vise.

  6. Securely mount the steering column in a table vise.
  7. Use the following procedure in order to remove the 2 ignition switch mounting bolts (2):
  8. 5.1. Use a hammer and a chisel in order to create slots on the top of the ignition switch mounting bolts (2).
    5.2. Remove the ignition switch mounting bolts (2) with a screwdriver.
  9. Turn the key in the ignition switch to the ON position or the ACC position.
  10. Remove the ignition switch (1) from the steering column.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the oblong hole (2) in the steering shaft (1) so that the hole is visible through and in the center of the hole in the steering column (3).
  2. Ensure that the ignition key is in either the ON position or the ACC position.

  3. Object Number: 349644  Size: SH
  4. Install the ignition switch to the steering column (2).
  5. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position.
  6. Remove the ignition key from the ignition switch (1).
  7. Align the ignition switch hub (3) with the oblong hole in the steering shaft.
  8. Rotate the steering shaft in order to ensure that the steering shaft locks.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the 2 new break-away head bolts to the ignition switch (2).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the break-away head bolts until the heads break off

  12. Turn the ignition key to the ACC position or the ON position.
  13. Ensure that the shaft rotates smoothly.
  14. Inspect for the proper lock operation.
  15. Remove the steering column from the table vise.
  16. Install the steering column to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  17. Install the steering wheel to the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  18. Connect the negative battery cable.
  19. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
