Removal Procedure
Tools Required
- Remove the transmission from the cylinder block. Refer to
Transmission Removal
in Manual Transmission --
M59 or Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission -- 4 Speed.
- Remove the clutch from
the flywheel (2) on manual transmission equipped vehicles. Refer to
Clutch Assembly Replacement
in Clutch.
- Inspect the ring gear. Replace the flywheel (2) if the ring gear
is damaged, cracked or worn.
- Inspect the surface which is contacting the clutch disc on manual
transmission equipped vehicles. Replace the flywheel if the surface is damaged
or excessively worn.
- Use a J 8001
with a J 26900-13
in order
to measure the flywheel (2) for face runout. Replace the flywheel if the
runout exceeds 0.2 mm (0.0078 in).
- Mark the flywheel-to-engine position.
- Remove the six flywheel retaining bolts.
- Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
- Remove the nylon clutch pilot bushing from the crankshaft (1).
- Clean the grease and dirt from the flywheel (2) outer surfaces
using a suitable solvent.
Installation Procedure
- Install the flywheel to the crankshaft. Align the flywheel-to-engine
marks.
Notice: Apply the proper amount of the sealant to the fastener when assembling
this component. Excessive use of the sealant can prohibit the component from
being assembled properly or allow the fastener to loosen. A component or fastener
that is not assembled properly can loosen or fall off leading to extensive
engine damage.
- Apply GM P/N 12345493, or the equivalent, to the flywheel retaining
bolt threads.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the flywheel
retaining bolts to the flywheel.
Tighten
Tighten the flywheel retaining bolts to 78 N·m (58 lb ft).
- Install the clutch to the flywheel on manual transmission equipped
vehicles. Refer to
Clutch Assembly Replacement
in Clutch.
- Install the transmission to the engine. Refer to
Transmission Installation
in Manual Transmission -- M59 or Transmission
Replacement in Automatic Transmission -- 4 Speed.
