Locking Hub Replacement Manual Locking Hub

Removal Procedure

Manual locking hub operation is accomplished by placing the transmission in N (neutral), moving the transfer case shift lever to 4H or 4L, and then moving the locking hub knob from the FREE to the LOCK position. Inspect the wheels for smooth operation with the knob in either position.

  1. Remove the six Allen-head bolts in order to remove the manual locking hub.
  2. Remove the manual locking hub.
  3. Remove the locking hub assembly from the wheel hub.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the manual locking hub assembly to the wheel hub. Be sure to align the fix cam with the slots in the spindle.
  2. Install the manual locking hub.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the six Allen-headed bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the manual locking hub bolts to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

Locking Hub Replacement Automatic Locking Hub

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the six Allen-head bolts in order to remove the automatic locking hub.
  2. Remove the automatic locking hub.
  3. Remove the locking hub assembly from the wheel hub.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 173481  Size: SH
  1. Install the automatic locking hub assembly to the wheel hub.
  2. Be sure to align the fix cam (1) with the slots in the spindle (2).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.
