J 26900-7 Dial Caliper

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 211583  Size: SH
  1. Remove the drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  2. Remove the pawl lever (7) and the adjuster spring (6).
  3. Remove the upper shoe return spring (1) and the adjuster (2).
  4. Remove the shoe hold down springs (5) by turning the shoe hold down pins.
  5. Remove the lower shoe return spring (3) and the brake shoes (4).

  7. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever (1).

  8. Object Number: 172462  Size: SH
  9. Remove the parking brake shoe lever (2) from the shoe.
  10. Inspect all drum brake components for wear, distortion, cracks, or other abnormal conditions and replace as necessary.

  11. Object Number: 172467  Size: SH
  12. Measure the lining thickness using J 26900-7 . If the thickness of the lining is less than 3 mm (0.12 in), replace the brake shoes (1). (Always replace brake shoes in axle sets.)

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 172462  Size: SH

    Important: Apply Lubriplate® GM P/N 1050109, white lithium grease, or equivalent, to all brake component metal contact points (where the brake shoe metal contacts the backing plate, the wheel cylinder and the adjustment strut, etc.) prior to installation.

  1. Install the parking brake shoe lever (2) to the brake shoe (3).

  2. Object Number: 172458  Size: SH
  3. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake shoe lever (1).
  4. Install the lower shoe return spring (2) and the brake shoes.

  5. Object Number: 172455  Size: SH
  6. Install the shoe hold springs (2) by pushing them down in place and turning the hold down pins (1).

  7. Object Number: 211583  Size: SH
  8. Install the upper shoe return spring (1) and the adjuster (2).
  9. Install the pawl lever (7) and the adjuster spring (6).
  10. Install the drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
