Inspect the brake shoe linings whenever brake drums are removed.

The brake shoe linings should be inspected for cracks, chipping, glazing or uneven wear. All of these conditions could be signs of serious problems in the drum brake assembly. If any of these conditions are noted, the brake shoe linings must be replaced and all components of the rear brakes must be inspected for the cause and for further problems.

Replace the brake shoe lining whenever the thickness of the lining is less than specifications. The brake shoe and lining assemblies should always be replaced in axle sets.

The minimum shoe lining material thickness is 1.0 mm (0.04 in)

To check for shoe lining thickness use the following procedure:

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  2. Object Number: 172387 Size: SH
  3. Remove the rubber plug from the backing plate.
  4. Visually check for thickness of the brake lining through the hole of the backing plate.
  5. Replace the brake shoe lining (1) whenever the thickness of lining material is less than 1.0 mm (0.04 in).
