The steering column is an energy-absorbing mechanism. The
steering column collapses in the event of a collision. This minimizes the
possibility of injury to the driver.
The ignition switch is column-mounted. You may lock the column in order
to inhibit theft. The combination switch controls the following functions:
• | The turn signal operation |
• | The windshield wiper/washer operation |
• | The cruise control operation (if equipped) |
You may remove the steering column from the vehicle with relative ease.
In order to ensure that the proper column energy absorption is maintained,
use only the specified screws, bolts, and nuts. Tighten these fasteners
to the specified torques.
Take special care in handling the column assembly if you remove the
column assembly from the vehicle. The plastic injections that keep the column
rigid can shear or loosen if the following events occur:
• | Using a steering wheel puller other than the recommended puller |
• | Hitting the end of the steering shaft |
• | Sharply leaning on the assembly |
