Repair Procedure

Caution: To avoid personal injury:

   • Do not allow the repair material to come in contact with skin or eyes and avoid breathing vapors.
   • Do not use near sparks or open flame.

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Important:

       • Ensure the rear window defogger repair kit materials have not passed the expiration date.
       • Ensure the rear window is at room temperature.

  3. Disconnect the rear window defogger system battery feed wires.
  4. Wipe the repair area with denatured alcohol in order to clean the area of all contaminates.
  5. Install the grid line repair decal or 2 strips of tape positioned above and below the repair area.
  6. Use the repair decal or tape in order to control the width of the repair area.
  7. If you are using decal, verify the die-cut metering slot is the same width as the grid line.
  8. Mix the grid repair material until a uniform color appears.
  9. Verify the window is room temperature.

  13. Object Number: 350515 Size: SH

Notice: The grid line repair material must be cured with heat. To avoid heat damage to the interior trim, protect the trim near the repair area where heat is to be applied.

Important: Use a heat gun in order to provide a fast cure of the grid line repair material.

Use a heat gun capable of 260-371°C (500-700°F).

The grid line repair material will cure in 24 hours with a constant temperature of 21-32°C (70-90°F), without the use of a heat gun.

  14. If using a heat gun, hold the heat gun 25-50 mm (1-2 in) (2) away from the repair area for 2-3 minutes.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16. Important: Allow a minimum of 24 hours for complete curing of the repair materials.

Do not physically disturb the repair area until after a minimum of 24 hours.

Operating the rear window defogger before the elapse of 24 hours is not prohibited.

  17. Test the rear window defogger operation in order to verify the grid line repair. Refer to Defogger Grid Lines Diagnosis .
