INSUFFICIENT WINDSHIELD CLEARING IN THE DEFROST MODE

Subject: Insufficient Windshield Clearing in the Defrost Mode (Replace Foam Seals on Defroster Duct)

Models: 1997-98 Chevrolet Venture 1997-98 Oldsmobile Silhouette 1997-98 Pontiac Transport

Some owners may comment that windshield clearing in the defrost mode, when in certain weather conditions, is not up to their expectations.

Cause

Airflow from the defroster duct outlet (defroster grille) effectively clears the windshield and meets all Manufacturer's and Federal Standards. However, the seal between the instrument panel upper trim and the defroster duct outlet may have moved into the opening and altered the airflow. The defroster duct outlet is made of a material that may not allow the seal adhesive to adhere properly.

Correction

Install new seals with reduced height and new adhesive. These new seals will stop any potential interaction/movement that the instrument panel upper trim may cause. Remove the IP upper trim following the Service Manual procedure in Section 8C and replace both seals on the defroster duct outlet

(Figure 1).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
