Engine Control Module Programming and Setup 2.0L Diesel
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
ECM Replacement
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed:
- ECM Reprogramming--Refer to
Service Programming System (SPS).
- Fuel Injection Programming--Refer to
Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming.
- Pilot Injection Reset--Use a scan tool to reset the injection values.
- DPF Reset Replace ECM--Use a scan tool to reset the DPF system.
- Theft Deterrent--Refer to
Immobilizer System Component Programming. The ECM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received, and a password is learned, a learn
procedure must be performed to change this password again. An ECM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password, and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn the current vehicle's
password.
- Engine Oil Life Remaining--When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
- Transmission Fluid Life Remaining--When available, use the scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
ECM Reprogramming
• | Engine Oil Life Remaining--When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed. |
Setup for Component Replacement
The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.
• | If the DPF pressure sensor, the DPF, injectors, or the ECM is replaced, you must reset the DPF system with a scan tool. |
• | If an injector is replaced, the following must be perform: |
- | The Pilot Injection values must be reset with a scan tool. |
- | The DPF system must be reset with a scan tool. |
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup LXV
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
Before Programming The Engine Control Module
Note: DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern.
The following criteria must be met before performing the programming or learning procedure:
• | There is no charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. |
• | Battery voltage is between 12-16 V. The battery must be charged before programming the control module if the battery voltage is low. |
• | A battery charger is NOT connected to the vehicle battery. Incorrect system voltage or voltage fluctuations from a battery charger may cause programming failure or control module damage. |
• | Turn OFF or disable any of the following systems that may put a load on the vehicle battery: |
- | Daytime running lights (DRL)--Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Refer to the Owner's Manual. |
- | Engine cooling fans, etc. |
• | The ignition switch is in the proper position. The scan tool prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so. |
• | All of the following tool connections are secure: |
- | The connection at the data link connector (DLC) |
- | The voltage supply circuits |
DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
ECM Replacement
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed:
Note: Clear any DTCs that may have set after completing the programming procedure.
- Enable ECM Reprogramming. Refer to
Service Programming System (SPS)
- Immobilizer Learn. Refer to
Immobilizer System Component Programming
- Engine Oil Life Remaining. When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.

Setup for Component Replacement
The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.
If any of the following components are replaced, use a scan tool to perform the appropriate learn or reset function.
• | Manifold absolute pressure sensor |
• | Accelerator pedal position sensor |
• | Crankshaft position sensor |
• | Camshaft position sensor |
