Circuit/System Description

Battery positive voltage is supplied to the windshield wiper motor and windshield washer pump. The wiper motor and washer pump are grounded through the control circuits and the windshield wiper/washer switch. Low speed, high speed, mist, and washer pump operation is controlled by the windshield wiper/washer switch by closing the control circuit contacts to the ground circuit contacts. The windshield wiper/washer switch also contains an interval relay which is supplied ignition voltage, ground, and the park switch signal. The interval relay controls delay operation, washer wipers, and the park function by grounding the windshield wiper motor through the low speed control circuit.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Wiper switch in the LO position, verify the windshield wipers are cycling at the low speed.
  2. If the wipers are not operating at the low speed, refer to Windshield Wiper Motor Circuit Malfunction.
  3. Wiper switch in the HIGH position, verify the windshield wipers are cycling at the high speed.
  4. If the wipers are not operating at the low speed, refer to Windshield Wiper Motor Circuit Malfunction.
  5. Wiper switch in the INT position, cycling the delay adjustment switch from long delay to short delay. Verify the wiper delay time decreases from long delay to short delay as each delay position is selected.
  6. If the delay does not change as specified, refer to Windshield Wiper Motor Circuit Malfunction.

Circuit/System Testing

Multifunction Switch Circuit Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector  X1 at the windshield wiper washer multifunction switch.
  2. Ignition ON, test for B+ at the windshield wiper washer multifunction switch Accessory Voltage circuit terminal  11
  3. If not the specified value, test the Accessory Voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit test normal, replace the Circuit Breaker  6.
  4. Ignition OFF, Reconnect harness connector  X1 and disconnect harness connector  X2 at the windshield wiper washer multifunction switch.
  5. Test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the ground circuit terminal  25 and ground.
  6. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  7. Ignition ON, with a test light connected to ground check for B+ at the Delay/Pulse/Park control circuit terminal  26.
  8. If not the specified value, test the Delay/Pulse/Park control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the windshield wiper washer multifunction switch.
  9. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the Windshield Wiper Switch Low Speed control circuit terminal  23 and ground. Verify the wiper motor runs at low speed.
  10. If not the specified value, test the Low Speed control circuit for a short to B+ or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the windshield wiper washer multifunction switch.
  11. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the Windshield Wiper Switch High Speed control circuit terminal  24 and ground. Verify the wiper motor runs at High speed.
  12. If not the specified value, test the High Speed control circuit for a short to B+ or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the windshield wiper washer multifunction switch.

Component Testing

Multifunction Switch

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the  X1 and X2 harness connectors at the windshield wiper washer multifunction switch.
  2. With the wiper switch in the OFF position, test for infinite resistance between the Ignition  1 voltage circuit terminal  11 and the washer pump control circuit terminal  12.
  3. If not the specified value, replace the windshield wiper washer switch.
  4. While activating the washer switch test for continuity between Ignition  1 voltage circuit terminal  11 and the washer pump control circuit terminal  12.
  5. If not the specified value, replace the windshield wiper washer switch.
  6. While cycling the wiper switch through each delay and speed position, test for the specified resistance between the Low Speed control terminal  23 and the Delay/Pulse control terminal  26.
  7. If not the specified value, replace the windshield wiper washer switch.
  8. With the wiper switch in the Low Speed position check for continuity between the Low Speed control circuir terminal 23 and the Ground circuit terminal  25.
  9. If not the specified value, replace the windshield wiper washer switch.
  10. With the wiper switch in the High Speed position check for continuity between the High Speed control circuir terminal 24 and the Ground circuit terminal  25.
  11. If not the specified value, replace the windshield wiper washer switch.

Windshield Wiper Motor

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the windshield wiper motor.
  2. Install a 25A fused jumper wire between the wiper motor ignition voltage terminal  3 and B+.
  3. Install a jumper wire between the wiper motor ground terminal  6 and ground.
  4. Install a jumper wire between Low Speed control terminal 23 and Ground. Verify the wiper motor is operating in the low speed mode.
  5. If the wiper motor is not in the low speed mode, replace the windshield wiper motor.
  6. Remove jumper wire from Low Speed control terminal  23 and Install the jumper wire between the High Speed control terminal  24 and Ground. Verify the wiper motor is now operating in the High speed mode.
  7. If the wiper motor is not in the high speed mode, replace the windshield wiper motor.
  8. Remove all previously installed jumper wires, Install a 25A fused jumper wire between the wiper motor Delay/Pulse/Park control terminal  26 and B+
  9. Install a jumper wire between the low speed control terminal  23 and Ground. Verify the wiper motor operates at Low speed.
  10. If the wiper motor is not in the low speed mode, replace the windshield wiper motor.
