Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 648043  Size: SH
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the brace from the transfer case to the engine block .
  3. Remove the transfer case shield from the transmission support. Refer to Transfer Case Shield Replacement .
  4. Remove the front propeller shaft from the transfer case. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  5. Object Number: 660273  Size: SH
  6. Remove the front output shaft dust seal.

  7. Object Number: 660275  Size: SH
  8. Remove the front output shaft seal.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 44636-1 Front Output Shaft Seal Installer
    • J 44636-2 Front Output Shaft Seal Protector

    Object Number: 660276  Size: SH
  1. Install the J 44636-2 on the front output shaft.

  2. Object Number: 660278  Size: SH
  3. Install the front output shaft seal on the J 44636-2 .

  4. Object Number: 660279  Size: SH
  5. Using the J 44636-1 , install the front output shaft seal.

  6. Object Number: 660279  Size: SH
  7. Remove the J 44636-1from the front output shaft.

  8. Object Number: 660276  Size: SH
  9. Remove the J 44636-2 from the front output shaft.

  10. Object Number: 660273  Size: SH
  11. Install the front output shaft dust seal.
  12. Install the front propeller shaft to the transfer case. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  13. Object Number: 648043  Size: SH
  14. Install the brace from the transfer case to the engine block.
  15. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  16. Install the brace mounting bolts.
  17. Tighten
    Tightens the brace mounting bolts to 128 N·m (94 lb ft).

  18. Check the transfer case fluid level. Refer to Transfer Case Fluid Replacement .
  19. Install the transfer case shield to the vehicle. Refer to Transfer Case Shield Replacement .
  20. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
