RADIO ASSEMBLY DIFFICULT OR UNABLE TO REMOVE

SUBJECT: RADIO ASSEMBLY DIFFICULT OR UNABLE TO REMOVE (REMOVE SCREW/ ADD RADIO RETAINER)

MODELS: 1993-94 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA

CONDITION:

SOME VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A CONDITION WHERE THE RADIO IS DIFFICULT OR UNABLE TO BE REMOVED.

CAUSE:

SOME INSTRUMENT PANEL RADIO BRACKETS MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY POSITIONED. THE I/P RETAINER BRACKET (1) WAS POSITIONED TOO FAR FROM THE RADIO TO PROPERLY SEAT THE RADIO RETAINER (3) INTO THE I/P RETAINER BRACKET. IN ORDER TO SEAT THE RADIO RETAINER INTO THE I/P BRACKET, A SCREW (2) WAS USED AS ILLUSTRATED IN FIGURE 1. THE RADIO RETAINER IS A "PUSH IN" TYPE AND SHOULD NOT REQUIRE A FASTENER FOR PROPER FIT. THE ACCESSIBILITY OF THE SCREW HAS MADE REMOVAL OF THE RADIO DIFFICULT.

CORRECTION:

TO VERIFY AND CORRECT THE CONDITION, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING:

1. DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

2. REMOVE RIGHT SOUND INSULATOR. REFER TO SECTION 8C OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

3. DISENGAGE TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE TO HVAC MODULE. REFER TO SECTION 1A AND 1B OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

4. REMOVE I/P TRIM PLATE. REFER TO SECTION 8C OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

5. PULL HVAC CONTROL HEAD FORWARD ENOUGH TO ACCESS BACK OF RADIO.

6. CONFIRM THAT THE SCREW IS PRESENT BY REACHING IN BACK OF THE RADIO AND FEELING FOR THE SCREW.

7. IF SCREW IS PRESENT, IT MUST BE REMOVED AND DISCARDED.

8. WHETHER OR NOT THE SCREW WAS PRESENT, CHECK THE RADIO RETAINER FOR PROPER INSTALLATION. THE RADIO RETAINER SHOULD "PUSH" THROUGH THE I/P BRACKET WHEN THE RADIO IS FULLY SEATED INTO THE I/P. IF A GAP EXISTS AFTER THE RADIO IS FULLY SEATED TO THE I/P, THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE PERFORMED:

A. REMOVE THE RADIO ASSEMBLY FROM THE I/P. B. REMOVE THE RADIO RETAINER FROM THE REAR OF THE RADIO. C. INCREASE THE LENGTH OF THE RADIO RETAINER BY USING AN ADDITIONAL RADIO RETAINER, P/N 22579804. THE NEW RADIO RETAINER SHOULD BE CUT 1/4 INCH (5MM) FROM THE REAR. D. THE CUT RADIO RETAINER SHOULD BE INSTALLED FOLLOWED BY THE ORIGINAL RADIO RETAINER. THE EXTRA RETAINER THAT WAS CUT WILL PROVIDE THE ADDITIONAL LENGTH NEEDED FOR THE RADIO RETAINER TO "PUSH" THROUGH THE I/P BRACKET.

PARTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FROM GMSPO.
