Remote Function Actuator (RFA)
The Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module is part of the remote keyless
entry system. The RFA module sends a serial data message to the Body Control
Module (BCM) through the Class 2 serial data line. The RFA Transmitter
(Key Fob) sends the following commands to the RFA Module:
• | The door lock and unlock control |
• | The rear compartment release |
The RFA module then sends a serial data message to the BCM in order
to perform the appropriate function. For programming of the RFA System refer
to Keyless Entry.
Wake-Up State
Wake-up signals turn ON the BCM and cause the BCM to begin active control
and/or monitoring of certain devices. The BCM wake-ups are:
• | Power door lock switches |
• | Interior lamp request active |
• | Ignition key put into the ignition switch |
• | Ignition key removed from the ignition switch |
• | Ignition in the ON position |
• | Rear compartment release switch |
• | Any Class 2 communication requiring BCM interaction. |
Asleep States
The BCM is asleep when the BCM has stopped controlling or monitoring
devices and has become idle again. After the ignition switch is turned to
the LOCK position and 20 minutes (1216 seconds) elapse without
any wake-up signals, the BCM enters into an asleep state and goes into the
low power mode. If the BCM is in low power mode and detects a wake up, the
BCM enters into the wake-up state and enters the high power mode. If the
vehicle has been left inactive (the ignition is in the LOCK position with
no BCM wake-ups) for 20 minutes, the BCM returns to the low power
mode.
Front Fog Lamps
The front fog lamps are a controlled option of the BCM. If the park
lamps are ON, the high beams are OFF when you press the fog lamp switch, the
BCM commands the fog lamp relay to turn the front fog lamps ON. Toggle the
high/low beam switch and the front fog lamps toggle OFF.
Remote Panic Alarm
The panic alarm (flashing head lamps and chirping horn) activates after
you press the horn button on the RFA transmitter. Press the horn button again
in order to de-activate the head lamps and the horn. Pressing the horn button
only once on the RFA transmitter activates the head lamps and the horn for
30 seconds or until the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position.
Passlock® System
The Passlock® theft deterrent system is designed to prevent vehicle
operation if the correct Ignition key is not used to start the vehicle. The
ignition key allows the lock cylinder to turn, which allows the Passlock®
sensor (located inside of the ignition switch assembly) to send a code to
the BCM. If the BCM receives the correct code from the Passlock® sensor,
the BCM sends a password to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which
allows the vehicle to start. For more information on the Passlock® system,
refer to Theft Deterrent.
Battery Run Down Protection
The battery run down protection system provides protection against parasitic
loads, excessive battery drain, and high current loads related to the courtesy
lamp circuit. The battery run down protection system also protects the battery
against run-down from the courtesy lamp circuit to the level which prevents
the vehicle from starting. The BCM turns OFF the courtesy lamp circuit after
the ignition switch is turned from the RUN position to the OFF position
and 20 minutes (1216 seconds) have elapsed without a lamp
request Input. You must perform one of the following actions in order to
return the BCM to normal operation once the battery run down protection
has shut the interior lamps OFF.
• | Shut OFF all lamps and close all doors. |
• | Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the ON position. |
Inadvertent Power Relay
The BCM turns OFF inadvertent power relay after 20 minutes (1216 seconds)
in order to preserve battery power. The 20-minute timer starts after any one
of the following conditions:
• | The ignition switch is turned from ON or START to UNLOCK, LOCK
or ACC. |
• | Illuminated entry is activated |
• | The interior lamps switch is turned ON |
• | The rear compartment is OPENED or CLOSED |
• | The under hood lamp is activated |
• | The courtesy lamps are activated |
• | The dome lamp is activated |
• | The glove box lamp is activated |
• | The reading lamp is activated |
• | The inside rear view mirror lamps are activated |
If any one of the following inputs reoccur during the 20-minute timer
period, the timer is reset to 20 minutes (1216 seconds).
• | The ignition switch is turned from ON or START to UNLOCK, LOCK
or ACC. |
• | The illuminated entry is activated |
• | The interior lamps switch is turned ON |
• | The rear compartment is OPENED or CLOSED |
• | The courtesy lamp is activated |
• | The dome lamp is activated |
Exit Lighting
Interior lights illuminate for 20 seconds when the ignition key
is removed from the ignition cylinder.
Remote Illuminated Entry
Interior lights illuminate for 40 seconds when the UNLOCK button
is pressed on the RFA transmitter. Interior lights illuminate for 2 seconds
when the LOCK button is pressed on the RFA Transmitter.
Power Door Lock/Unlock Function
The Body Control Module (BCM) is responsible for energizing the driver's
door unlock relay. The drivers door unlock relay is energized whenever the
BCM receives a command from the door lock/unlock switches or from an input
from the RFA module on the class2 serial data line.
Door Lock/Unlock Switch Function
The Body Control Module (BCM) commands the driver's door unlock relay
to unlock the driver's door according to the state of the driver's door lock/unlock
switch or the passenger door lock/unlock switch.
Remote Lock
• | Press the RFA transmitter LOCK button once and all doors lock. |
• | Press the RFA transmitter LOCK button twice within 3 seconds
and all doors lock and the horn chirps. |
Remote Unlock
• | Press the RFA transmitter UNLOCK button once and the driver door
unlock, the park lamps flash and the interior lights turn ON. |
• | Press the RFA transmitter UNLOCK button twice within 3 seconds
and all remaining doors unlock, the park lamps flash and the interior lights
turn ON. |
Audible Warnings
When the Body Control Module (BCM) determines a that a driver warning
sound is needed, the BCM sounds the chime when applicable.
Key-In Reminder
The key-in reminder chime sounds when all of the following conditions
are true:
• | The ignition switch is not in the RUN or CRANK position |
• | The ignition key is in the ignition key cylinder |
• | The drivers door is open |
Refer to Audible Warnings.
Head Lamp Reminder
The head lamp reminder chime sounds when all of the following conditions
are true:
• | The head lamp switch is in the park lamp position or in the head
lamp position |
• | The ignition switch is in the OFF position or ACC position |
The head lamp reminder chime does not sound when the following conditions
are true:
• | The dome lamp switch is in the full down position (max dim) |
• | The head lamps are turned ON manually |
• | The ignition key is removed |
Refer to Audible Warnings.
Seat Belt Reminder
The seat belt reminder chime sounds for 6 seconds when the ignition
switch is turned from the OFF position to the RUN position and the seat belt
is unfastened. The seat belt telltale on the IPC also turns ON. Refer to
Audible Warnings.
Turn Signal Reminder
The turn signal reminder chime sounds when the right or the left turn
signal remains ON for more than 0.75 miles. The chime is synchronous
with the turn signal flasher. Refer to Audible Warnings.
Driver Warning Telltales
The BCM sends requests to turn the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) telltales
ON or OFF. These requests are sent on the Class 2 serial data line.
If the IPC can not communicate with the BCM via Class 2, the IPC
turns the security telltale ON steady. The list of messages sent by the
BCM to the IPC are as follows:
Interior Lighting Control
The BCM can turn ON the following lighting components independently
of the interior lighting system:
• | Inside rear view mirror lamps. |
• | Courtesy lamps are enabled by the following inputs: |
- | Discrete input to the BCM from the door jamb switches or door
handle or dome lamp input |
- | RFA transmitter activation (function of illuminated entry) |
