Subject:Erratic Speedometer, Erratic Shifting, Cruise Control Inoperative, DTCs P0502, P0758, P1860 Set (Repair Vehicle Speed Sensor Wires and Reposition Harness)

Models:2003 Oldsmobile Alero
2003 Pontiac Grand Am
with 2.2L Engine (VIN F -- RPO L61), Automatic Transmission (RPO MN4) and Non-Antilock Brakes (RPO J41)

Condition

Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions:

    • Erratic speedometer readings
    • Erratic shifting
    • Cruise control inoperative

Upon investigation, the technician may find DTCs P0502, P0758, or P1860 set.

Cause

These conditions may be caused from the extra length of Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) harness intermittently contacting the right axle shaft. This contact may cause a rub-though to the wires enclosed in that harness, resulting in the above conditions.

Correction

Repair any damaged wires and reposition the VSS harness away from the contact area. Use the following procedure.

  1. Inspect and repair any damaged wires at the suspected area. Refer to Wiring Repair in the Wiring System sub-section of the Service Manual.
  2. Follow the VSS harness as it runs up to the top of the engine. Release harness routing clips at bracket at backside of engine and at camshaft cover rear bolt.
  3. Pull the harness upward, moving the slack (approximately 80 mm (3.15 in)) above clip at camshaft cover rear bolt.
  4. Re-secure clips.
