Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 37088-A Fuel Line Quick Connect Separator
    • J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
    • J 39580 Engine Support Table

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Object Number: 63013  Size: SH
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  5. Drain the oil from the crankcase.
  6. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief in Engine Controls.
  7. Recover the air conditioning system. Refer toRefrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating, Veltilation and Air Conditioning.

  9. Disconnect the fuel feed (1) and return lines (2) using the J 37088-A .
  10. Remove the EVAP cannister purge solenoid and hose from the right camshaft cover.

  11. Object Number: 63015  Size: SH
  12. Disconnect the throttle (1) and cruise control (2) cables at the throttle body.
  13. Disconnect the wire harness at the bulk head.
  14. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the surge tank.

  16. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the coolant crossover.

  17. Object Number: 63017  Size: SH
  18. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the thermostat housing.
  19. Disconnect the upper transmission cooler hose at the radiator.
  20. Disconnect the lower transmission cooler hose at the transmission.

  21. Object Number: 63018  Size: SH
  22. Disconnect the heater hoses from the coolant pipes at the rear of the engine.
  23. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the brake booster.
  24. Remove the shift control cable retaining bracket from the transmission.
  25. Disconnect the shift control cable from the lever on the transmission.
  26. Install the J 28467-A .
  27. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the junction block.

  29. Remove the through bolt from the torque axis mount.
  30. Remove the front engine mount bolts from the torque axis mount bracket. Set the mount aside.
  31. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the engine block.
  32. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  33. Remove both front wheels.
  34. Remove the right and left side splash shields.
  35. Disconnect the electrical connector from the steering gear.
  36. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the right ball joint. Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  37. Disconnect the right hand tie-rod from the knuckle.
  38. Remove the right axle shaft from the hub assembly.
  39. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering gear intermediate shaft.
  40. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the left ball joint. Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  41. Disconnect the left hand tie-rod from the knuckle.
  42. Remove the left axle shaft from the hub assembly.
  43. Remove the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  44. Disconnect the engine oil cooler hoses at the adapter if equipped.

  46. Remove the engine to transmission braces at the oil pan.
  47. Remove the engine to transmission braces at the right bank toward the front of the engine.
  48. Remove the engine to transmission braces at the left bank at both the front and the rear of the engine.

  50. Remove the flywheel cover.

  52. Remove the flywheel to converter bolts

  54. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.

  55. Object Number: 62336  Size: SH
  56. Remove the oil filter.
  57. Remove the oil filter adapter from the engine block.

  58. Remove the air conditioning hose and muffler from the rear of the air conditioning compressor.
  59. Position the J 39580 under the engine.
  60. Lower the vehicle.

  62. Remove the left transmission mount.
  63. Release the engine support.
  64. Remove the bolts from the frame.
  65. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  66. Remove the engine/transmission/frame assembly from under the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 37088-A Fuel Line Quick Connect Separator
    • J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
    • J 39580 Engine Support Table

    Object Number: 63020  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the engine to transmission bolts.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the engine to transmission bolts to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  3. Install the flywheel to converter bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the flywheel to converter bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  5. Install the flywheel cover.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the flywheel cover to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  7. Install the engine to transmission brace at the oil pan.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Install the engine to transmission brace at the right bank, toward the rear of the engine.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  11. Install the engine to transmission brace at the left bank, front and rear of the engine.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  13. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  14. With the powertrain on a dolly, move the powertrain into the approximate position under the vehicle.
  15. Lower the vehicle onto the powertrain.
  16. Align the powertrain frame to the body.
  17. Install the mounting bolt.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 192 N·m (142 lb ft).

  19. Install the J 28467-A .
  20. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General information.
  21. Remove the dolly.

  23. Install the left transmission mount.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the left transmission mount to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  25. Install the air conditioning and muffler to the rear of the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  26. Object Number: 62336  Size: SH
  27. Install the oil filter adapter to the engine block.
  28. Install the oil filter adapter bolts.
  29. Tighten
    Tighten the oil filter adapter bolts to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  30. Connect the engine oil cooler hoses to the adapter if equipped.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the oil cooler fittings to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  32. Install the oil filter.
  33. Install the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  34. Install the left axle shaft to the hub assembly.
  35. Install the left tie-rod to the steering knuckle.
  36. Install the left ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  37. Install the pinch bolt to the steering gear intermediate shaft.
  38. Install the right axle shaft to the hub assembly.
  39. Install the right tie-rod to the steering knuckle.
  40. Install the right ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  41. Connect the electrical connector to the steering gear.
  42. Install the right and left side splash shields.
  43. Install both front wheels.
  44. Lower the vehicle.
  45. Connect the negative battery cable to the engine block.

  47. Install the front engine mount bolts to the torque axis bracket.
  48. Install the through bolt to engine torque axis mount.
  49. Connect the positive battery cable to the junction block.
  50. Remove the J 28467-A .
  51. Connect the shift control cable to the transmission shift lever.
  52. Install the shift control cable retaining bracket.
  53. Connect the vacuum hose to the brake booster.

  55. Connect the heater hoses to the coolant pipes at the rear of the engine.
  56. Connect the lower transmission cooler hose to the transmission.
  57. Connect the upper transmission cooler hose to the radiator.

  58. Object Number: 63017  Size: SH
  59. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing.

  60. Object Number: 63016  Size: SH
  61. Connect the upper radiator hose to the coolant crossover.
  62. Connect the coolant hoses to the surge tank.
  63. Connect the engine wire harness to the bulk head.

  64. Object Number: 63015  Size: SH
  65. Connect the throttle (1) and cruise control (2) cables to the throttle body.
  66. Install the cannister purge soleniod to the right cam cover.

  67. Object Number: 63014  Size: SH
  68. Connect the fuel feed (1) and return (2) lines.
  69. Refill the oil level.
  70. Refill the coolant level. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.

  71. Object Number: 63013  Size: SH
  72. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  73. Connect the negative battery cable.
  74. Recharge the air conditioning. Refer toRefrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
