Starter Replacement L47

Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the battery.
  3. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.0L.

  4. Object Number: 104910 Size: MH
  5. Remove the solenoid S terminal nut.
  6. Remove the battery cable nut.

  7. Object Number: 54606 Size: SH
  8. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts.
  9. Remove the starter motor.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 54606 Size: SH

Notice: Before installing the starter motor to the engine, tighten the inner nuts on the solenoid terminals to be sure that they are secure in the cap. Tighten the inner nuts on the battery terminal and the starter motor terminal to 8 N·m (70 lb in). If the nuts are not properly tightened, the starter may fail later due to terminal or cap damage.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Connect the solenoid switch lead.
  2. Tighten
Tighten the nut to 3 N·m (26 lb in).

  3. Install the battery cable nut.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  5. Install the starter motor.
  6. Install the starter motor mounting bolts.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  8. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.0L.
  9. Connect the positive battery cable.
  10. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
