Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the retainer and electrical connector from the fluid level sensor.
  2. Drain the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  3. Disconnect the reservoir hose from the master cylinder.
  4. Plug the hose to prevent a fluid loss or contamination.
  5. Disconnect the brake pipes (4) from the master cylinder.
  6. Plug the open pipes to prevent a fluid loss or contamination.
  7. Remove the two attaching nuts (3).

  8. Object Number: 177410 Size: SH
  9. Remove the master cylinder.
  10. Remove the reservoir if it is to be used on the replacement master cylinder.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 177410 Size: SH
  1. Connect the reservoir onto the master cylinder as needed. Refer to Master Cylinder Cover/Caps Replacement .
  2. Bench bleed the master cylinder prior to the installation to remove any trapped air. Perform this procedure on a level surface. Use a tool that will not score the bore of the master cylinder. Apply pressure to the plunger as many times as needed to circulate the brake fluid completely through the master cylinder. Allow the brake fluid and trapped air to be released through the inlet and outlet ports on the master cylinder.

  3. Install the master cylinder (1) onto the power booster (2).
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the attaching nuts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  7. Install the brake pipes.
  8. Tighen
Tighten the brake pipe fittings to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  9. Connect the reservoir hose onto the master cylinder.
  10. Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the full level mark using only Delco® Supreme II Brake Fluid or the equivalent, DOT 3 brake fluid, as specified in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  11. Electrical connector to fluid level sensor, secure with retainer.
  12. Bleed the hydraulic system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .
  13. Recheck the fluid level in the reservoir.
