This bulletin is being revised to update the parts information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 99-02-32-008 (Section 2 -- Steering).


Condition

Some customers may comment about a steering shudder during slow speed turning/parking maneuvers.

Cause

This condition may be due to a steering hose vibration.

Correction

For 1995-1998 vehicles with a RH routed outlet hose assembly and for 1999 vehicles with a LH routed outlet hose assembly, install a LH routed anti-shudder Power Steering Outlet Hose Assembly, P/N 25728474.

Replacement Procedure


Object Number: 631438  Size: SH
  1. Use a suction device to drain the power steering fluid from the power steering pump reservoir to below the outlet port.
  2. Loosen the nut (2) securing the power steering outlet hose to the upper generator frame attachment stud.
  3. Disconnect the power steering hose (1) from the power steering pump assembly.
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  5. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual.

  6. Remove LH front tire/wheel assembly.
  7. Remove the front splash shield.
  8. Remove the LH and RH lower splash shield.
  9. Loosen the nut (3) securing the power steering outlet hose to the lower generator frame attachment stud.

  11. Remove the power steering outlet hose assembly retaining clip bolt/screws (4).
  12. On 1999 vehicles, remove the power steering outlet hose from the two rosebud clips on the LH engine frame crossmember.
  13. Disconnect the power steering outlet hose from the steering gear assembly.
  14. Remove the power steering outlet hose assembly from the vehicle.
  15. On 1995-1998 vehicles, drill two 6 mm (¼ in) holes (5) into the top surface of the LH engine frame crossmember. Both holes are to be approximately 35 mm (1.5 in) rearward from the front and rear control arm brackets horizontal flange edge.

  17. Remove the two rosebud clips (6) from the new hose assembly (7).
  18. On 1995-1998 vehicles, install the two rosebud clips into the holes drilled on the top surface of the LH engine frame crossmember.
  19. Install the new LH routed power steering outlet hose assembly, P/N 25728474.
  20. 16.1. From the forward side of the front engine mount, route the pump end of the hose assembly to the RH side of the vehicle and up to the generator attachment studs.
    16.2. Route the steering gear end of the hose assembly to the LH side of the vehicle, under the steering gear tie rod and up to the steering gear assembly.
  21. Lower the vehicle.

  23. Connect the power steering outlet hose (1) to the power steering pump assembly.
  24. Tighten the nut (2) securing the power steering outlet hose to the upper generator frame attachment stud.
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the upper generator frame attachment nut to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  26. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  27. Tighten the nut (3) securing the power steering outlet hose to the lower generator frame attachment stud.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the lower generator frame attachment nut to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  29. Connect the power steering outlet hose to the power steering gear assembly.
  30. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear outlet hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  31. On 1995-1998 vehicles, position the two retaining clips (4) on the top surface of the front engine frame crossmember over the existing holes and fasten with two 10 mm bolt/screws.
  32. Tighten
    Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

    Important: Using a 90 degree angle head drill with a short drill bit is recommended.

  33. On 1999 vehicles:
  34. 24.1. On the top surface of the front engine frame crossmember, drill two 5 mm (0.2 in) holes using the attached retaining clips as templates.
    24.2. Position the retaining clips so that the metal part of the hose does not contact the cradle.
    24.3. Fasten the retaining clips with two 10 mm bolt/screws.

    Tighten
    Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  35. On the rearward side of the front engine frame crossmember, drill one 5 mm (0.2 in) hole using the attached LH retaining clip (6) as a template.
  36. 25.1. Position the retaining clip so that the metal part of the hose does not contact the cradle.
    25.2. Fasten the retaining clip with a 10 mm bolt/screw.

    Tighten
    Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screw to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  37. Secure the power steering outlet hose assembly with the two rosebud clips (5).
  38. Install the LH and RH lower splash shields.
  39. Install the front splash shield.
  40. Install the LH front tire/wheel assembly.
  41. Lower the vehicle.
  42. Fill and bleed the power steering using J 43485.
  43. Refer to Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998.
