J 36850 Transmission Assembly Lubricant

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  2. Remove the right front tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
  3. Remove the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement
  4. Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. The splined portion of the axle can cut the seal.

  5. Remove the right drive axle from the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement

  6. Object Number: 289514  Size: SH
  7. Remove the transmission brace bolts.
  8. Remove the transmission brace.

  9. Object Number: 97404  Size: SH
  10. Remove the case extension bolts.
  11. Remove the case extension assembly and the seal.

  12. Object Number: 97409  Size: SH
  13. Remove the thrust bearing and the thrust bearing washer.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 97409  Size: SH
  1. Install the washer and the thrust bearing onto the final drive assembly. Use the J 36850 or the equivalent petroleum jelly, in order to retain the washer and the bearing.

  2. Object Number: 97407  Size: SH
  3. Install the seal and the case extension.
  4. Check the final drive end play. Refer to Differential Carrier End Play Check in the Transmission Unit Repair Manual.

  5. Object Number: 289514  Size: SH
  6. Install the transmission brace.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the case extension bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 36 N·m (26 lb ft).

  10. Install the transmission brace bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).

    Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. The splined portion of the axle can cut the seal.

  12. Install the right drive axle into the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
  13. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Install the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement .
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Fill the transaxle to the proper level. Refer to Fluid Capacity Specifications .
  17. Inspect the transaxle fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
  18. Inspect for fluid leaks.
