General Motors has determined that some 1986 Oldsmobile Calais models equipped with automatic transaxle, column shift, and standard instrument panel cluster may have been assembled without the "Unleaded Fuel Only" warning on the instrument panel cluster. This is a violation of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Advisory Circular Number 32B.
Involved are certain 1986 Calais models equipped with an automatic transaxle, column shift and standard instrument panel cluster within the following serial numbers:
Up To Assembly Plant Beginning And Including -------------- --------- ------------- Lansing (M) GM318594 GM325971
To correct this condition on vehicies involved, the instrument panel cluster will require inspection for the presence of the "Unleaded Fuel Only" warning.
If the warning is not present, an "Unleaded Fuel Only" decal must be installed as described in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin.
Since decals can be installed very easily and because we do not want to cause owners unnecessary inconvenience, "Unleaded Fuel Only" decals are being furnished directly to affected owners of record. Owners may install the decal personally or they may request dealer assistance for installation.
If requested, dealers are to perform this recall campaign on affected vehicles at no charge to the own regardless of time, mileage, or ownership. In addition, dealers are to correct all affected vehicles in dealer new and used car inventory prior to their sale.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your used car inventory in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling the vehicle.
1. Visually inspect the instrument panel cluster for the presence of the "Unleaded Fuel Only" warning. Refer to Figure 1.
2. If warning is not present, install decal using the following procedure:
A. Locate area on instrument panel cluster where the decal is to be applied. Refer to Figure 1.
B. Clean the surface by wiping with a clean dry cloth.
C. Remove backing from decal and carefully apply decal to instrument panel cluster.
3. Install a Campaign Identification label. Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Service Procedure will require a Campaign Identification label. Each label provides a space to include the campaign number, the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service, and the date vehicle was campaigned. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen. When installing label, clean the surface of the radiator upper mounting support and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible.
"Unleaded Fuel Only" decals will be furnished directly to affected owners of record with instructions for installation. Owners may install the decal personally or request that it be installed by an Oldsmobile dealership. Owners will be advised to bring the decal with them if they elect to have a dealership install it.
The correct quantity of decals is enclosed with this Campaign Bulletin for VINs on your campaign list with no owner name. These decals are being provided on a "NO CHARGE" basis. They WILL NOT BE billed on dealer parts account. Dealers should not order for WDDGM.
If transfer, loss or damage make additional decals necessary, contact your zone office.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
