This bulletin serves to revise the ChaRT and Facing Page for Code 36 in Section 6E3 "Driveability And Emissions" in the 1988 CutLass Calais and Firenza Service Manual, for the Cutlass Calais with the (VIN D) 2.3L engine. Please make a reference to this bulletin on pages 6E3-A-54 and 6E3-A-55.
CODE 36 CLOSED TH ROTTLE AIR FLOW TOO HIGH 2.3L (VIN D) "N" SERIES (PORT)
Code 36 is the result of a check intended to detect intake vacuum leaks and sets when:
Engine running Calculated air flow greater than a calibrated value TPS signal is less than 3% (about 120 mV above learned zero voltage) IAC valve commanded position is 5 counts (steps) or less Above conditions are met for 5 seconds or more
Check for vacuum leaks, unconnected lines, brittle hoses, cuts, etc. Examine manifold and throttle body gaskets for proper seal. Check for cracked intake manifold. Check for normal operation of TPS and MAP, as compared to known good cars if necessary. Check for open in IAC CKTs 441, 442, 443, and 444 or faulty connections at ECM terminals "YC3", "YC4", "YC5" and "YC6" or IAC terminals "A" and "C". An IAC valve which is stopped in an open position and can't respond to the ECM, or minimum air rate throttle stop screw set too high, can also cause Code 36. If no problem is found, and code re-sets, replace ECM.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
