Some 1987 Firenza and Cutlass Ciera models equipped with the 2.8L PFI engine may set a false Code 43. The false code will be set under a deep, part throttle crowd between 3400 and 4400 engine rpm. As a result of setting this code, the "service engine soon" light will come on and generally will stay on until the ignition key is turned off. A Code 43 will be stored.
To service customer complaints, perform service diagnosis for Code 43 as defined in the Service Manual, section 6E3, to correct any of the following conditions: faulty knock sensor, "intermittents", faulty connections, open or shorted wiring problems, or MEM-CAL.
To correct the MEM-CAL, a new part number MEM-CAL will be required.
The part numbers and model applications are shown in the following chart:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
