SMU-SEC. 8A INCOR. SPEEDO. READING - INSULATE CONNECTOR

SUBJECT: INOPERATIVE SPEEDOMETER - INSERT INSULATOR IN CONNECTOR

MODEL/YEARS: 1993 CUTLASS CIERA WITHOUT CRUISE CONTROL

CONDITION: On very early 1993 Cutlass Ciera models built without cruise control, the speedometer may be inoperative.

CAUSE: The connector for the cruise control module is taped to the harness on cars built without cruise control. If there is nothing to separate the terminals in the connector, the terminals may touch, shorting out the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal to the cluster.

Early built vehicles may have nothing in the connector, or may have a small piece of clear plastic, which should be replaced with the insulator. The insulator was added shortly after start of production, and there were very few vehicles built with this condition.

CORRECTION:

---------- 1. Remove left-hand sound insulator panel.

2. Insert an insulator P/N 12064999, which is currently available from GMSPO, into the cruise control module connector, as shown in the illustration.

3. Reinstall left-hand sound insulator panel.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
