CAMPAIGN: 200-4R MANUAL VALVE LINK SEPARATION

MODELS/YEARS CERTAIN 1987 CUTLASS SUPREME, CUTLASS SALON, AND CUSTOM CRUISER MODELS WITH 200-4R TRANSMISSIONS

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1987 Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass Salon, and Custom Cruiser models equipped with 200-4R (MW9) transmissions. These vehicles may have a manual valve link in the transmission which was improperly formed. This condition could lead to the link separating, resulting in a gear selection different from what the driver selects with the shift lever and what appears on the shift indicator. Also, the car could be started when the transmission is in gear. Thus when selecting a gear or starting the vehicle, it is possible for the vehicle to unexpectedly move in an unanticipated direction. Such unexpected movement could result in an accident without prior warning.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Certain 1987 Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass Salon, and Custom Cruiser models equipped with 200-4R transmissions (Option MW9) within the following vehicle breakpoints:

Year Series Plant Beginning Through and Including ---- ------ ----- --------- --------------------- 1987 Custom Cruiser Clark St. H9015770 H9017744 (Cadillac-Detroit)

1987 Cutlass Salon Pontiac Plant 8 HP335351 HP342882 and Supreme

About one-half of the vehicles with 200-4R transmissions within the above breakpoints are not affected. All subject vehicles which are listed on the dealer's campaign printout will require correction as outlined in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin.

Should a question exist concerning the campaign involvement of a specific vehicle(s) within the breakpoints listed above, dealers should call the Computerized Recall Information System (C.R.I.S.) for verification.

DEALER ACTION

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring on vehicles involved, dealers are to replace the manual valve link.

Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
