TRANSAXLE NEUTRAL GEAR RATTLE (5 SPEED M/T GETRAG 284 M27)

TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS: SUBJECT: GETRAG 5-SPEED TRANSAXLE TRANSAXLE NEUTRAL GEAR RATTLE (REPLACE CLUTCH DISC)

TRANSMISSION MODELS: VEHICLE APPLICATIONS: 1991-92 "W" CAR

Some owners of 1991-92 W cars may comment about a "rattle" noise when the Getrag 284 5-speed transaxle (M27) is in neutral with the clutch engaged and engine is at idle.

Various levels of minor gear "rattle" or noise are inherent in all manual transaxles. A Customer may perceive gear "rattle" as clutch, engine, and/or transmission noise. The "rattle" noise should be considered as normal. It will not affect the function or durability of the vehicle.

Inherently, a clutch disc that is designed to dampen neutral gear rattle may increase clunk between shifts or during throttle tip in and tip out.

NOTE 1: Before replacing any components, evaluate the severity of the neutral gear rattle, also, test drive the vehicle and check for a clunk between shifts. Minimal levels of both these conditions should be considered normal.

If your evaluation is that the clunk is not objectionable, a new clutch disc is available to address the neutral gear rattle concern.

NOTE 2: Even though the clutch disc is designed to dampen the neutral gear rattle, the inherent design of the clutch disc may increase the severity of any clunk between shifts.

NOTE: Replace clutch components per Service Manual. Be sure to follow the proper clutch cover bolts tightening sequence as stated in Section 7C of the Service manual.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
