HOT PLASTIC DOOR WITH HEATER ON (REPLACE CLUSTER)

SUBJECT: HOT PLASTIC ODOR WITH HEATER ON (REPLACE CLUSTER)

MODELS: 1994 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME

CONDITION:

THE CUSTOMER MAY COMMENT ON A SMELL DESCRIBED AS HOT PLASTIC OR HOT WIRING. THE ODOR IS USUALLY NOT PRESENT UNTIL AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES OF DRIVING, AND WILL BE MUCH MORE NOTICEABLE IF THE LIGHTS ARE ON, AND THE HVAC IN HEATER MODE. THE ODOR WILL NORMALLY DISSIPATE OVER TIME, MORE RAPIDLY WITH EXPOSURE TO BRIGHT SUNLIGHT.

CAUSE:

THE SOURCE OF THE ODOR IS THE INK USED IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FACE PLATE. THE GAS RELEASED IS NON-TOXIC. HEAT WILL MAKE THE CONDITION MORE NOTICEABLE, PARTICULARY WHEN THE I/P CLUSTER BACKGROUND LIGHTS ARE ON. THIS CONDITION WAS GREATLY REDUCED IN PARTS PRODUCED AFTER NOVEMBER 1, 1993.

CORRECTION:

VERIFY THAT THE ODOR IS COMING FROM THE CLUSTER. REMOVE THE CLUSTER AND CHECK THE BUILD DATE. THE BUILD DATE IS A QUARTER-SIZED STAMPING LOCATED ON TOP OF THE CLUSTER AND CAN BE READ AS FOLLOWS:

- THE FIRST TWO (2) DIGITS INDICATE THE DAY OF THE MONTH. - THE THIRD (3RD) DIGIT IS THE MONTH. 1 THROUGH 9 ARE JANUARY THROUGH SEPTEMBER; A IS OCTOBER, B IS NOVEMBER, AND C IS DECEMBER. - THE FOURTH (4TH) DIGIT IS THE YEAR.

ANY CLUSTER AFTER BUILD DATE 01B3 SHOULD BE MUCH IMPROVED AND WILL LIKELY NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.

IF THE CLUSTER WAS PRODUCED PRIOR TO THE ABOVE DATE, NOTE THE MILEAGE, THEN CONTACT ONLY THE EXCHANGE CENTER BELOW FOR A REPLACEMENT PART.
