Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly 3100 Engine L82
Removal Procedure
- Turn OFF the ignition key.
- Remove the spark plug wire retaining clips from the engine.
- Rotate the engine. Refer to Rotating Engine in Engine Mechanical.
Notice: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot.
Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the
wire could be damaged.
- Disconnect the spark plug wires. Be sure to note the position of the
wires BEFORE removing them.
Installation Procedure
- Connect the spark plug wires to the proper location.
- Return the engine to the proper position. Refer to Rotating Engine
in Engine Mechanical.
- Install the spark plug wire retaining clips to the engine.
Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly 3400 Engine LQ1
Removal Procedure
- Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
- Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold
Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
- Remove the spark plug wire retaining clips at the front of the
engine.
- Remove the spark plug wire retaining clips at the rear of the
engine.
Important: Do not pry on one side of the boot with a screwdriver to remove it.
The boot is made of plastic and may break if pried with a screwdriver. The
boot can usually be removed with your hand by twisting to loosen it, then
pulling it out.
- Disconnect the spark plug wires. Be sure to note the position of the
wires BEFORE removing them.
Installation Procedure
Important: Care should be used to avoid tearing the boot when installing it. Make
sure that the boot is correctly located over the spark plug before applying
pressure to install the boot.
- Install the spark plug wires to the proper position.
- Install the spark plug wire retaining clips at the rear bank of
the engine.
- Install the spark plug wire retaining clips at the front of the
engine.
- Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold
Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly 3800 Engine L36
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 38491 Spark Plug
Heat Shield Removal Tool.
- Turn OFF the ignition key.
- Remove the fuel rail cover. Refer to Fuel Rail Cover Replacement
in Engine Controls.
Important:
- Note the position of the wires before removing them.
- Twist the spark plug boot 1/2 turn before removing the boot.
- Gently pry the heat shield up from spark plugs using J 38491
(right rear cylinders only).
- Remove the spark plug wires form the spark plugs.
- Remove the spark plug wires for the wire looms.
- Disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil pack. If replacing
the spark plug wires, transfer the following components:

Installation Procedure
- Connect the spark plug wires to the coil pack in the proper position.
- Connect the spark plug wires to the wire loom.
- Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs in the proper
position. Make sure that the heat shield is seated against the bump stop and
that the lower tabs extend over the hex on the spark plugs (right rear cylinders
only).
- Install the fuel rail cover. Refer to Fuel Rail Cover Replacement.
