Spark Plug 3100 Engine L82

Removal Procedure

Caution: Wash your hands after handling coated spark plugs and before smoking. The coating is a non-hazardous material and incidental contact will not cause any adverse effects. However, exposure to polymer vapors - the result of contamination of cigarette products and subsequent burning of the polymer - may result in flu-like symptoms and should be avoided.

Notice: Observe the following service precautions:

   • Allow the engine to cool before removing the spark plugs. Attempting to remove spark plugs from a hot engine may cause the plug to seize, causing damage to the cylinder head threads.
   • Clean the spark plug recess area before removing plug. Failure to do so can result in engine damage due to dirt or foreign material entering the cylinder head, or in contamination of the cylinder head threads. Contaminated threads may prevent proper seating of the new plug.
   • Use only spark plugs specified for use in the vehicle. do not install spark plugs that are either "hotter" or "colder" than those specified for the vehicle. Refer to SECTION 0B for spark plug usage information. Installing plugs of another type can severely damage the engine.

    Object Number: 47610 Size: SH
  1. Turn OFF the ignition key.
  2. Rotate the engine. Refer to Rotating Engine in Engine Mechanical.
  3. Notice: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

  4. Remove the plug wires from the spark plugs. Note the position of the wires before removing them.
  5. Remove the spark plugs from the engine.

Installation Procedure

Notice: It is important to check the gap of all new and reconditioned spark plugs before installation. Pre-set gaps may have changed during handling. Use a round wire feeler gauge to be sure of an accurate check, particularly on used plugs. Installing plugs with the wrong gap can cause poor engine performance and may even damage the engine.

  1. Measure the spark plug gap on the spark plugs to be installed. Compare to gap specifications given in SECTION 0B. Correct as necessary.
  2. Notice: Be sure plug threads smoothly into cylinder head and is fully seated. Use a thread chaser if necessary to clean threads in cylinder head. Cross-threading or failing to fully seat spark plug can cause overheating of plug, exhaust blow-by, or thread damage. Follow the recommended torque specifications carefully. Over or under-tightening can also cause severe damage to engine or spark plug.

  3. Install the spark plugs to the engine.
  4. Tighten
Tigthen the spark plug to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  5. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Be sure to use the proper location.
  6. Return the engine to the proper position. Refer to Rotating Engine in Engine Mechanical.

  3. Important: Do not pry on one side of the boot with a screwdriver to remove it. The boot is made of plastic and may break if pried with a screwdriver. The boot can usually be removed with your hand by twisting to loosen it, then pulling it out.

  4. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Be sure to note the position of the wires before removing them.
  5. Remove the spark plugs from the engine. Use a spark plug socket with a rubber insert to hold the spark plug.
