To correct for starter motor noise during starting, use the following procedure:

  1. Diagnose the cause of the starter motor noise. Refer to Starter Motor Noise Diagnosis. Be sure that shims were not used during initial installation.
  2. If the diagnosis indicates that the pinion should be closer to the flywheel, check to make sure that the proper starter motor was installed.
  3. If the diagnosis indicates that the pinion should be moved away from the flywheel, add 1 mm (0.04 in) shims until the noise disappears.
  4. • Use a maximum of 2 shims.
    • Do not exceed 2 mm (0.08 in).
