Removal Procedure

  1. With an assistant, remove the hood.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Remove the air cleaner duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Element .
  4. Important: Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure in Engine Fuel.

  5. Disconnect the fuel lines from the rail and the mounting bracket. Lay the fuel lines aside. Refer to Fuel Lines in Driveability and Emissions-Fuel Injection.
  6. Remove the coolant recovery bottle. Refer to cooling and radiator in Engine Cooling.
  7. Remove the inner fender splash shield. Refer to Inner Fender Splash Shield in Body Front End.
  8. Remove the acoustic engine cover. Refer to Acoustic Engine Cover Replacement
  9. Disconnect the throttle cables from the throttle body and the mounting bracket.
  10. Remove the heat shield from the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  11. At the same time, remove the throttle cable mounting bracket and the vacuum line.
  12. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe from the manifolds. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  13. Remove the engine mount strut bolts from the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  14. Remove the engine mount strut brackets from the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement and Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement
  15. Remove the engine cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fans in Engine Cooling.
  16. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Engine Coolant in Engine Cooling.
  17. Disconnect the oil cooler hoses at the radiator. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
  18. Remove the vacuum lines to the transaxle vacuum module. Refer to Automatic Transaxle in Automatic Transmission.
  19. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  20. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  21. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator in Charging System.
  22. Remove the generator support brace. Remove the engine strut bracket with the coil pack.
  23. Remove the electrical connections from the engine.
  24. Remove the upper radiator hose from the engine. Refer to Upper Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  25. Remove the lower radiator hose from the engine. Refer to Lower Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling. .
  26. Remove the heater hoses from the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses in Engine Cooling.
  27. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably. Refer to Vehicle Support in General Information.
  28. Remove the flywheel cover. Refer to automatic transaxle in Automatic Transmission.
  29. Scribe the torque converter to the flywheel for installation.
  30. Remove the flywheel converter bolts. Refer to automatic transaxle in Automatic Transmission.
  31. Remove the wire harness clamps from the frame near the radiator.
  32. Remove the A/C compressor from the bracket. Lay the A/C compressor aside. Secure the compressor to the frame. Refer to A/C Compressor in Heater, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  33. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor in Cranking System.
  34. Remove the transaxle mount bracket to the engine mounting bolts. Refer to Transaxle Mount Bracket in Automatic Transaxle On --Vehicle Service
  35. Remove the engine mount to frame nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  36. Remove the oil cooler pipes from the hose connections. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
  37. Remove the front exhaust pipe from the manifold. Refer to Exhaust Pipe in Exhaut System.
  38. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Remove the transaxle to the engine bolts. Use a bolt in order to ground the wire harness. Refer to automatic transaxle in Automatic Transmission.
  40. Remove the engine from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine. Align the engine with the transaxle dowel pins.
  2. Install the transaxle to the engine bolts. Ground the wire harness. Refer to automatic transaxle in Automatic Transmission.
  3. Connect the heater hoses to the engine. Refer to Heater Hose in Engine Cooling.
  4. Connect the upper radiator hose to the engine. Refer to Upper Radiator Hose in Engine Cooling.
  5. Connect the lower radiator hose to the engine. Refer to Lower Radiator Hose in Engine Cooling.
  6. Install the electrical connections to the engine.
  7. Install the engine strut bracket with the coil pack. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement
  8. Install the generator support brace. Refer to Generator Support Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  9. Install the generator. Refer to Generator in Charging System.
  10. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Power Steering Gear and Pump On-Vehicle Service.
  11. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  12. Install the vacuum lines to the transaxle vacuum module. Refer to automatic transaxle in Automatic Transmission.
  13. Install the engine cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fans in Engine Cooling.
  14. Connect the oil cooler hoses at the radiator. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
  15. Install the engine mount strut to the engine. Install the engine mount strut bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  16. Install the exhaust crossover pipe to the manifolds. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  17. Install the throttle cable mounting bracket. Install the vacuum line.
  18. Install the heat shield to the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  19. Connect the throttle cables to the throttle body and the mounting bracket.
  20. Install the acoustic engine cover. Refer to Acoustic Engine Cover Replacement
  21. Install the inner fender splash shield. Refer to Inner Fender Splash Shield in Body Front End.
  22. Install the coolant recovery bottle. Refer to Coolant Reservoir Bottle in Engine Cooling.
  23. Connect the fuel lines to the rail and the mounting bracket. Lay the fuel lines aside. Refer to Driveability and Emissions in Engine Controls.
  24. Raise the vehicle.
  25. Install the front exhaust pipe to the manifold. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  26. Connect the oil cooler pipes to the hose connections. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
  27. Install the engine mount nuts to the frame. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  28. Install the transaxle mount bracket to the engine mounting bolts. Refer to automatic transaxle in Automatic Transmission.
  29. Install the starter motor. Refer to charging system in Engine Electrical.

  30. Install the A/C compressor to the bracket. Refer to A/C compressor bracket in Heater, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  31. Install the wire harness clamps to the frame near the radiator.
  32. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Align the scribe marks. Refer to automatic transaxle in Automatic Transmission.
  33. Install the flywheel cover. Refer to Flywheel Cover in Automatic Transmission.
  34. Lower the vehicle.
  35. Refill the engine coolant. Refer to cooling and radiator in Engine Cooling.
  36. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to power steering system in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  37. Install the air cleaner duct. Refer to cooling and radiator in Engine Cooling.
  38. Connect the negative battery cable.
  39. With an assistant, install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.
  40. Inspect all of the fluid levels.
  41. Inspect for leaks.
