Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Left Side
Removal Procedure
- Drain the engine coolant.
- Remove the air cleaner duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
- Remove the thermostat bypass pipe clip nut.
- Remove the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to
Automatic Transaxle.
- Remove the right engine mount strut at the engine. Refer to
Engine Mount Strut Replacement
.
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the engine. Refer to Cooling
and Radiator.
- Remove the PCV valve from the cover. Refer to Engine Controls.
- Remove the heater outlet hose. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
- Remove the thermostat bypass pipe (without
oil cooler).
- Remove the thermostat bypass pipe (with
oil cooler).
- Remove the left rocker arm cover bolts.
- Remove the left rocker arm cover.
- Remove the left rocker arm cover gasket.
- Clean the cover and cylinder head gasket surfaces.
Installation Procedure
- Install a new gasket.
- Install the left rocker arm cover.
Important: Apply sealant, GM P/N 12345739, or equivalent, at the cylinder head
to lower manifold joint.
- Hand tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·mmm (89 lb in).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the heater outlet hose.
- Install the thermostat bypass pipe (without
oil cooler).
- Install the thermostat bypass pipe (with
oil cooler).
- Install the PCV valve to the cover. Refer to Engine Controls.
- Connect the upper radiator hose at the engine. Refer to Engine
Cooling.
- Install the right engine mount strut at the engine. Refer to
Engine Mount Strut Replacement
.
- Connect the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to
Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
- Install the thermostat bypass pipe clip nut.
- Install the air cleaner duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
- Refill with engine coolant. Add two engine coolant sealant pellets,
GM P/N 3634621, or equivalent.
- Bleed the cooling system. Refer to Engine Cooling.
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Right Side
Removal Procedure
- Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Remove the engine mount struts at the engine. Refer to
Engine Mount Strut Replacement
.
- Rotate the engine. Refer to
Rotating the Engine for Service Access
.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coil. Refer
to Ignition System.
- Remove the ignition coil. Refer to Ignition System.
- Remove the plastic cover from the shock tower.
- Remove the generator front and rear braces. Refer to Charging
System.
- Remove the generator. Refer to Charging System.
- Disconnect the EGR valve. Move the EGR valve aside. Refer to Engine
Controls.
- Remove the right valve rocker arm cover
bolts.
- Remove the right valve rocker arm cover.
- Remove the right valve rocker arm cover gasket.
- Clean the cover and cylinder head gasket surface.
Installation Procedure
- Install the new rocker arm cover gasket.
- Apply sealant, GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent, at the cylinder
head to lower manifold joint.
- Install the right rocker arm cover.
- Hand tighten the rocker arm cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

- Install the generator front brace and the generator rear brace.

- Install the plastic cover to the shock tower.
- Install the ignition coil. Refer to Ignition System.
- Install the electrical connectors to the ignition coil. Refer
to Ignition System.
- Rotate the engine. Refer to

- Install the engine mount struts at the engine. Refer to
Engine Mount Strut Replacement
.
- Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to
