Tools Required
Removal Procedure
- Remove the spark plug wires. Refer to Engine Electrical.
Important: Rotate the engine so that the piston in the cylinder being worked on
is at top dead center before removing the valve locks. This will eliminate
the possibility of the valve falling inside the cylinder.
- Remove the camshaft carrier. Refer to
Camshaft Carrier Replacement
.
- Break the spark plug loose. Clean the spark plug recess. Refer
to Engine Electrical.
- Remove the spark plug. Refer to Engine Electrical.
- Install the J 22794
to the spark plug port.
- Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.
- Use the J 38606
in
order to compress the valve springs.
- Disassemble the valve locks.
- Disassemble the valve cap. Do not score the valve stem.
- Remove the valve spring.
- Wrap a piece of cellophane tape over the valve stem lock grooves.
- Disassemble the valve stem oil seal.
Installation Procedure
- Install the new valve stem oil seal. Press the new valve stem
oil seal over the guide boss.
- Remove the cellophane tape from the valve stem.
- Assemble the valve spring.
- Assemble the valve cap.
- Compress the valve spring.
Use the J 38606
.
- Install the valve locks. Hold the valve locks in place with grease
if necessary.
- Release the valve spring. Fully seat the valve locks.
- Shut off the compressed air. Remove the J 38606
.
- Install the spark plug. Refer to Engine Electrical.
- Install the camshaft carrier. Refer to
Camshaft Carrier Replacement
.
- Install the spark plug wires. Refer to Engine Electrical.
